so... there's this set of 2.1 speaker that's plugged into the jack output of my computer's crap, onboard soundcard. so far so good. when i unplug the system and plug in my headphones the sound seems as if it's been drastically hipassed.

any idea what's causing this? the headphones sound just as they should when connected to anything else.

is it a headphone output or is it line out?

if you insert your headphones into the line out jack you have a impedance mismatch that could course the problem you describe.

That's what it sounds like to me too.

Your headphones could also be out of phase, but I suspect you're plugging into a line, not headphone output, or the jack is somehow not completely inserted into the connection.

Post

it's the line output. and the jack is properly inserted. thing is, when i plug it in just barely, there seems to be a bit more bass.

Post

There you go. Line out isn't the right jack. Got a headphone jack?

Post

there are three jacks.

1, green, which although oddly enough has a microphone symbol is where the speakers are connected
2, blue, with a inward arrow symbol
and 3, pink, with a outward arrow symbol, which i'm assuming is the headphone jack.

tried the other 2 but i get no sound coming through.

I'd ignore the symbol; these days the color coding for sound cards is standardized. Lime green is Line Out, blue is Line In and pink is Mic In. Looks as if it hasn't a separate headphone jack. Them's the breaks.

Sounds like the common ground (sleeve) doesn't make proper contact. Try to wiggle the plug, and see weather it makes any difference.

Probable causes:
* the plug isn't properly inserted
* the plug diameter is slighty smaller than standard
* the soundcard output is slightly larger than standard
* lots of pluggin in & out caused wear on the output jack, and the contact needs to be bent in place
