I haven't read all pages, BUT...

I think what would be ideal is a hw step sequencer interface to a software step sequencer.

I agree! There are midi interfaces for using with soft synths (M-Audio, various other brands), there are midi interfaces for using with drum machines (Trigger Finger, padKONTROL).

So why can't there be midi interfaces for using with software step sequencers?

All you would need would be a shell with a bunch of buttons. A 16-step pattern, a small octave thingie, buttons for pattern storage, a tempo control etc. Everything would be done in software (Fruityloops, Ableton, whatever).

I think it's a great idea--and there would be a market for it. Everybody knows that step sequencers are more fun when you have direct, physical control to what's going on.

i'd like a tabletop step sequencer that consisted of a few rows of 16 knobs and one row of 16 X0X style buttons. dedicated knob for swing (adjustable for each track individually), pattern based, ability to change patterns on the fly, and the ability to manipulate or change arrangements on the fly (similar to Live but just with MIDI). four midi outs. oh, and of course track mutes, scene selections, and rock solid timing a la MPC-3000. :D

Well, that would do the job. But it would require learning a bunch of max/msp etc. which keeps focus away from the music and back on the hardware/programming.

I don't own one (too rich for my blood!) but I'm pretty confident someone has already written a basic step sequencer patch for it... load it up and away you go!

Monome designs are great for drum steppers, because in contrast to the single 808 running light, you see more tracks at the same time. A combination of a button grid with a few encoder rows for midi notenumber, velocity and gate should be cool.

What do you people think about a 16 step design with 8 rows to trigger drums and 3 rows for sequencing parameters?
Would that give a decent interface? :)

I have a device I call the MidiGate. Basically you set it to respond to 16 midi notes and every time you you press one of those notes you get a high output. You can then use this high to trigger a row of CV controls just like a hardware sequencer.

You'd need a midi sequencer to program the sequence but it'll go forwards, backwards, right circle, left circle, split, night rider, skip... ext anyway you want to program the track and it will run in sync with your sequencer. Then use the CV controls to program notes played.

You can stack as many gates as you like in groups of 16 notes. If you've got an old analog drum machine this will supply 16 midi triggers. As an extra, extra you can use the outputs to switch Triacs off and on to control a midi light show for each song in your set.

I'm not selling them again until late September. So this is just a heads up that there is such a device.

Thank You, yes I'm busy and still testing different versions. There will be one low-price machine for under 300 Euros. Starting with a small product seems to make the most sense.

A nice interface providing a grid with 128 light buttons and 48 encoders and some more controls for additional functions will cost at least 400 Euros extra.

Lets see, the Monome one-twenty-eight with 128 buttons and no rotary encoders costs 800 USD!

Whatever happens, I'm still in the mood to build some nice hardware!
