Hi, I want to improve my piano playing. My focus is on using it as a composition tool.
I think what I really have to improve on is hand independence.

I already googled a bit and found some bits of advice and exercises, but am still searching for a more comprehensive (free) guide. So if you happen to know about one, please share!

Btw, I can read sheet music, but am really slow at it. So while notated exercises are fine, a more abstract guide that'd help me make up my own exercises would be even better.

For now I'm just looking for free stuff floating around the net, but if you know a book you really want to recommend, feel free to.

Thanks,

Josh

Thanks, maybe I should've pointed out though that I'm more of an intermediate than a total beginner. Also, still looking for a guide that thoroughly deals with L/R hand independence.

Expert Village looks like a good place to start though, weird that I've never been there before. The tiny clips are a little annoying though...

I always recommend Mikrokosmos by Bela Bartok, it's very abstract by the way, and you can make up your own sorts of things taking off from these bases; interval exploration, differing sets of finger combos, varying degrees of tension, it's simple enough but it's musical, and stimulates (rather than dulls, which so many books seem to do) the mind

jancivil, would you recommend Mikrokosmos be used without a teacher? Does the book show suggested fingerings?
