that's exactly what I meant: usually people do come to the defense of the names of already existing plugins - here in this case the developer himself comes and says 'I clearly own the rights to the name, but feel free to use it as long and you do not refute my right to use it as well' - and then he gets eye-rolling and name-calling for it...
but I agree that he perhaps could have worded it a bit better.

That's all I'm saying. He has full right to point out he's used the name. But without changing the spelling, I'm not sure what kind of claim he's actually got to it.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend. I won't edit the remark as if to pretend I hadn't made it, but I _will_ extend an apology for the tone.
I guess I'd better explain a little- I'm very used to operating as a 'little guy' w.r.t namespaces. I have a kind of EQ plugin that works like it is a bunch of analog resonant filters and initially I called it Reso, but someone pointed out that there was a Digidesign synth (?) named that, so I changed mine to ResEQ.
My pet fear- and really I shouldn't worry because I depend on the way I work with people for sales, not on any particular name- is for someone to come along, snap up the names of my products, hire a lawyer and stop me from using them. That's the only reason I reacted in a way that would make me apologize within 12 hours- I pictured whoever this is going "Hey, that guy used the name! STOP HIM!". Density is actually one of the first plugs I ever did, and I was pretty pleased when I made it a free example- I felt I was doing something nice by giving people something very useful and basic.
I apologize for reacting in a snippy way and repeat again that I have no intention of asking anyone else not to use such a simple name. It's not even a for-sale product of mine, no harm done. Please don't demand that I stop using the name, because it perfectly describes what my plugin does, which is not compression but literally the gentlest saturation curve that could possibly exist.
Is that okay? If people would like me to do more to apologize, please tell me what it is. This compressor plugin actually sounds like a great approach, particularly for the 2-buss.

My eye rolling was more because of his way of "intruding" (in this case only half intruding as he clearly can point out he used the name first but hi COULD have just sent a PM to bootsy) into other threads with similar "products". He always goes "Have you tried MY plugin? It is one of the best I have ever heard, it can do blah blah blah" in a completely irrelevant and sometimes blatantly thread steering situation.jens wrote:that's exactly what I meant: usually people do come to the defense of the names of already existing plugins - here in this case the developer himself comes and says 'I clearly own the rights to the name, but feel free to use it as long and you do not refute my right to use it as well' - and then he gets eye-rolling and name-calling for it...

I'm a bit tired of that kind of developer enthusiasm. Why not simply create your own threads?
That's all..
@jinxtigr: what annoys me a bit is the often self promoting tone when you jump into other threads and that you have limited your plugins to one single platform and a single format which makes it impossible for a lot of people to check your claims. This is of course no fault of yours but you might dial down the "I am superior" tone in some of your posts, especially when they are part of threads with some other well established developers.
Cheers!
bManic
EDIT: edited a hundred times for marginally better spelling and structure.. I need to go back to school.

bmanic- I think that's very good advice. You're saying that it's a much better idea to start threads, than to jump into threads with 'hey I can do that!'?
I'm sorry if I'm coming off as superior. It's kinda part of the territory when you make your living designing and selling products of some kind- nobody goes, hi, buy my thing, it's not as good! But I've seen what happens when a developer feels _personally_ superior to the people he's trying to serve, and I don't like it.
I know I have a lot to learn- I'm not very clue-ful about basic social expectations. I have an autistic streak a mile wide and that means I can never be secure that I'm interacting with people okay- it's indispensable to me when someone, like you, makes me aware of something I'm doing wrong.
The up-side is, that same handicap lets me write code to make things sound exactly the way I want, so I am not complaining.
Thank you especially for pointing it out now because I am finishing up new stuff and also starting to research VST (it's unfamiliar, so it's hard for me to wrap my head around) and very soon I'll need to put into practice what you're telling me. I don't want to be alienating people. I mean well

I thought I'd better add that it's not a figure of speech- I AM an autistic person, so what bmanic says is totally valid, and just the sort of trouble I'm likely to get into if I don't learn better. It is the most natural thing for me to barge cheerfully into some situation and unless I want to go back on disability and give up, I'm going to have to learn the ropes and figure out how to communicate such things.
And I don't want to go back on disability. I _like_ having something to contribute.
Maybe in line with what bmanic said, if this is a conversation it ought to be in a different thread?

dont let Roger Nichols spot this one or it will be his next plugin's name (after he buys some other developer's products to refurbish them with his name written on the GUI and doubling the price, of course...)ddummer wrote:D

Well, bManic said it more eloquently than I, as usual. Hell, let's see what Bootsie says; he may not care either way. I think it'd be one thing if Bootsie was Waves, but he's not - he's not even selling these! - so that's another reason I was taken aback by it; plus, your products are GUI-less AU plugins that won't get used much, if at all, by the same people. Just a thought.

Yup. And I said twice that it was fine for him to use the name Density, and I think it's a good name and it sounds like a great idea for a plug. I'm really not sure what more I can do, but ask and ye shall receive.
I do need to stop Rain-Manning the threads, bmanic is right. Though I definitely have some neat stuff coming up. Definitely. It's definitely neat. can I have a ride to K-mart?
(that movie is awesome, though a little close to home)
Let's drag this back on topic. It sounds like a combined L/R/M/S compressor is a really great idea! I'm not aware of anything else that does exactly that. It might act a bit like the RNC 'super nice mode' in that it could become much more 'transparent' and un-obvious in operation.
It really does sound like a great idea, especially if you want to compress the width of your track dynamically.

Sorry for the inconvenience, I probably did not researched enough.jinxtigr wrote:As long as you don't mind the fact that my 'Density' AU plugin has been out for ages, knock yourself out
It's one of the freebie distortion AUs. In fact I added highpassing and stuff to it SPECIFICALLY BY REQUEST OF KVR, so I'm surprised it didn't come up yet.
Enjoy, don't even think of trying to get a trademark on that one. I have no problem with you calling your thing 'Density' provided you don't object to mine, which was there first
Fair enough?
Since I'm not into trademarking things I understood that it's no problem to you that I will use this name for my plugin - thanks for that kind offer.
Does anyone else see some kind of branding collisions?
peace,
bootsie
