Hi,
I would appreciate some advice. I have an old Roland D-110, and I'm not sure
if I can, or, how to include it in my set-up. I'm a newbie.
Currently I'm using;
Windows XP Professional
Intel core 2cpu
T7200 @ 2.00GHz
1.99GHz, 2.00GB of Ram
Cubase SE 3
Sample Tank 2 XL
Alesis iO2 soundcard
any info would help
Thankyou

i own myself a Roland D110 (and also a Roland D10)...
im working mostly inside the box nowadays so definitely im not using almost all my old hw...
what keeps me from selling the D110 is a) there are some sounds on it that i still love them and i ll hopefully bring it back to action at least bouncing on audio the stuff thru the mixer or thru the audiocard directly b) selling it will only get you, I fear, a very small amount of money (i think about 50 euros or so)...
with that said im keeping it..if you dont have many other sound sources that are reliable on doing the kind of sounds a D series Roland synth can produce, you can, as already pointed out, record the the stuff played thru midi by the module while recording on HD thru Cubase and the audiocard..
....mmmm all of a sudden a preset called "soundtrack", if my memory works, came back to mind...i should find some time to sample some stuff out of it
another option is to sample the sound and then translate it into a Sampletank preset, and then playing from there..
for that task there some freeware and payware alternatives (on the payware side you can check the SampleRobot software)
Peace

If I still had a D-110.....I'd SELL it!!
It did have some good
sounds but always found it a PITA to navigate and even more of a bear
to program....that being said I still own and use some Roland hardware
synths from that era...I've got a U-110 and a modded MT-32 that I like
a lot....just never could warm up to the D-110's way of doing things.
Cheers......CL

Hmmm...likewise, I used to have a D110. Never warmed to it. Sold it pretty darned quick. It was IMO a dire example of the plinky-plonky and nasty characterless bright-sounding but dull digital plague that infected the 80s. Especially one of those nasty black boxes with tiny little 2-line LCD screens that take you an hour and a half just to change to a different midi channel. And the filters...'orrible. Couldn't stand them. From what I remember of the D110 - every patch went "twang". Didn't matter if it was a piano, string pad, drum hit, sitar or alien special FX - it all went "twang". And it was a very obvious digital "twang"
As to how to use it in your setup...your Alesis soundcard has a midi out jack? You'll only be able to play the D110 via midi, so if your soundcard hasn't got midi, you'd need to buy some kind of midi card for your PC. Most cards have at least one midi out though. You just use a midi cable from your soundcard midi out jack going to your D110 midi in jack, then in your host click onto whatever midi channel the D110 is set to to play it. You can automate a D110, but I seem to remember most of the deeper functions (if you can call a 110 deep
) are controlled by nRPNs not the usual midi CCs - do-able, but I remember it being a bit of a nightmare when I first got into it. Most of the nRPNs seemed to be about controlling the amount of twang you get.

as already pointed out, i wouldnt sell my ole D110 mainly because a) selling it would produce such a small amount of money that i would feel sad about b) i still like some sounds generated by that module..
the D10/D110 is the baby of the D series, but IMO its still capable of some good sounds on the pad/atmo field..(that, after all, its the main reason for the D series die hard fans to love them)
with that said, as far as i remember, most of the parameters are accessable for editing thru CC..
of course, being a PITA doing that thru the lilliput-sized screen, i used mostly editors and librarians hooked from the pc to deal with that thru MIDI...
if you plan to check out, at synthzone.com there are several suggestions on that side (freeware-wize mostly)
plus check your pms as i just replied to you (after long while, apologies
Peace out

check out this link to a site called jumbletown in ireland-
somone gave away one of these suckers for free- i missed this by a few days.
Id keep it - even if you only use one sound of it , its worth it if its the right sound in the right place-
I have an old Emu proteus fx sound module that i got for 60 euros- theres like 20 sounds on it i like- so 3 euros pre sound not bad.
