Playing synths, creating sounds and making samples is a lot of fun but sometimes I miss the piano and its simple joy. This week I made this piano improvisation in 2 parts. So here it is:
Part 1
Part 2
Let me know what you think of it!

First - I like the tone you captured. The piano sounds very good. I'm curious to know the technical details!
For the following, I may not get the terms right, but that has never stopped me.
I like the free-form structure a lot. It's refreshing to hear the shifts in meter, time signature and dynamics. My favorite parts are when it goes into tango-like transitions and the occasional semi-atonal passages. The end of part one, where it goes quiet, is very nice. Same in the second part.
I think the second mp3 gels a bit better than the first, in a conventional sense. This doesn't take anything away from the first one, it's just an observation. I like non-conventional music, so that should help clear up the comment.
I also like the parts where strong bass chords are paired with quick runs on the high keys.
One of the reasons I like improvisations is that it sometimes brings the listener into the process of discovery, and I think that has happened here. You have a nice touch on the keys.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the detailed comments and I am glad that you like my piece.
I did not edit or process the original impro in any way (MIDI or audio).

The recording process was straightforward. I played my Yamaha P-80 digital piano through a Mackie Onyx mixer. I recorded the MIDI and audio outputs in Sonar 5 (audio at 24/96). I then exported the audio in 16/44 to make the MP3s.mikebeck wrote:First - I like the tone you captured. The piano sounds very good. I'm curious to know the technical details!
