Anyone go out and make their own samples with a recorder?
What are some crazy samples you have used to make a song or beat?

i've sampled trains in subway tunnels, the sounds of people screaming on fairground rides, parades going past, gunshots , drunks coming out of bars, police vans driving down my street, my drummer mate playing beats on a derelict wagon, the smashing of windows, various domestic appliances, hitting lamposts with metal bars ...
i spent about a year with a portable minidisc, recording pretty much anything that made a noise ... a lot got used on tracks, but a lot more didn't

I coincidentally recorded a jogger passing by last year which made a nice unique background rythm.

Check out some of these:

90% of source material is homegrown. Just me, a couple of mics and a recorder. Oh, and a full tank of petrol!

right now I'm using a sample of beating eggs (for scambled eggs) I recorded on a camping trip. Cool for rhythm and melody.

I once used a bird call, granulated into this long ambience. That was pretty cool.
But the madest has to be when I sample my toilet flushing and used it as part of a weird industrial ambience. My bog makes some odd noises!

I recorded a slap bass riff, and put it in a song with no regards to what key it was in.

The toilet in my last place (very old house) made a very strange water rushing sound - without flushing. I sampled that and ran it through a formant filter and it was a pretty cool ambience

Corr! It really is a thread from the dead - I bet now though, what with massive choice of recorders there are many more guys that record stuff around them.
I am getting the umph! To do some more this year. I reckon on putting mics into more obscure places to see how those turn out. I would like to capture the sound of one of those nodding donkeys (oil pumps), but being in the UK the places they are situated is pretty few and far between - I do know of a good one though, that hopefully I can get to
Best regards,

My song "Call him Curtis" on www.myspace.com/slothbrain uses as its whole vocal track the recording that happened when a 14-year-old on a ferry in Greece borrowed my minidisc because he got bored of the grown-ups playing cards - I don't think he thought his opus would ever resurface anywhere! (aside - does anyone know how to link a single myspace song, rather than the band page?)
I've also made a playable instrument out of recordings of the Very Large Array radio telescope tracking a quasar across the sky: mp3 demo (and web page). I made another one out of an Ikea stainless steel cutlery holder -listen to mp3 demo (and web page here).

We used our zoom h4 to record prepared piano, vocals, bontempi organ turned off, gardening tools, cardboard boxes, misc.

Using a squeaking Dog toy we created these Crazy Squeak Loops.
Feel free to download the demo loops and have a look at the rest of our loops.
