For me, i like to use Reaper as the main Rewire host and route Live and Reason thru it.
-Reaper-I get the Cubase/Vegas style editing i'm use to with the flexible routing for effects, mixing and recording of outboard gear
-Reason-I get the use of Rex files and the Redrum machine
-Live-I get to audition sounds in sync and lock samples into time with my music trks
i like the setup for my personal workflow, but that's just me

Hi Kusser,
Are you able to get all three ie REAPER, Live, and Reason connected at the same time an in sync tempo wise?
Thanks,
dw

i open reaper first, then insert a trk and select Reason as the Rewire device under the FX button
Launch the Reason app
then i insert a trk and select Ableton Live as the Rewire device under the FX button
launch Live
and everything is in sync,
even auditioning loops in the Live Browser
hope that helps

Live and Reaper compliment each other beautifully; each seems to make up for the other's weak spots. With Reaper you are getting a full set of audio recording/routing/mixing features which Live can't touch; basically a "real" Arrange view, and not the tease that Live offers.
There are many options for how to use them together; both Rewire and Reaper's ReaRoute ASIO feature works great, as well as using Live's ability to render all individual tracks, which can then be opened in Reaper for mixing or extensive audio recording.
There is also the karmic cool zen balance of using "Live" and "Reaper"...it's like they were meant to be together!

Between Live 7's native Rex support and new Drum Racks, these are not great reasons to continue using Reason!kusser wrote: -Reason-I get the use of Rex files and the Redrum machine

True...
but i like the automation of controls on the Dr Rex and Redrum machines, the step sequencing on the Redrum, plus the sequencing and midi editing in Reason.
But that's just my preference....
cheers

I just installed Live lite, which came bundled with some hardware. I'm pretty excited about its creative possibilities and will be trying to sync it with Reaper, when I get running with it.

Hmmm...got to messing around with Live last night and I'm a little put off by the limitations of the lite version. They make sense, since it just came with some hardware, but I'm not real sure how useful it might be.
So, now I'm wondering if Live can really do anything special that I can't do with Reaper, alone... with the right setup. The full version of Live 7 looks promising, but I don't want to shell out that much money if I can get a similar creative workflow going with what I've already got.
Anyone care to chime in here?

did you put it in full version demo mode? the only limitation there is you can't save or export.a7 wrote:Hmmm...got to messing around with Live last night and I'm a little put off by the limitations of the lite version. I am now using Live rerouted into reaper. Besides all the other benefits it has solved a HUGE Live bug. the glithes from some plugin guis bug. I use live ti sequence in and reaper to host the vsti's that cause the problems.
Thank you for the tutorial!

The ReGroove mixer IS a great reason to continue using Reason thoughjamester wrote:Between Live 7's native Rex support and new Drum Racks, these are not great reasons to continue using Reason!
I really, really hope that Ableton get around to adding groove quantise of some sort in Live 8...
Also of course Reasons other instruments like Thor - well worth firing up Reason for, and I still find it the perfect compliment to Live.

There are many great reasons to keep using Reason; I was saying that Dr. Rex and ReDrum aren't two of them if one has Live 7, in response to Kusser's comment.headquest wrote:The ReGroove mixer IS a great reason to continue using Reason thoughjamester wrote:Between Live 7's native Rex support and new Drum Racks, these are not great reasons to continue using Reason!![]()

Groove quantize would be sweet for Live 8...as would crossfades, track folders, customizable key commands, free-item positioning/grouping, track lanes etc etc... (All reasons I use Reaper for audio recording/mixing instead of Live.)
