Are There Any Good Hardware FM Synthesizers?

The FS1r is not an "FM synth", it's a "Formant Shaping / FM synth". As a pure FM synth, it's not really complex. Its unique architecture is what makes it such a unique, great sounding synth.

The Formant part is fully integrated into the FM, the Formants are nothing else than a bandpassed operator waveforms with an adjustable (via Formant Sequences, CCs and and additional envelope per Operator) cutoff frequency and bandwidth, that can be used as carriers or modulators as well. That way carrier or modulator frequencies aren't exactly fixed anymore, since it's possible to simply sweep thru them...
