I'm curious what people think about this and other similar programs.

I'm curious what people think about this and other similar programs.
I think that they include a reasonable number of variables, and a reasonable number of disclaimers to make this a useful tool for experimentation. Others I've seen like this fail to take into account many of the variables here and basically produce random strings of pitches (which can be useful in certain situations).

I've seen melody generators that use even more specific rules to produce things that are much more stylistically appropriate for certain styles.

Interestingly, concepts like this have been around for a long time. Google "Mozart's Dice Game" and you'll get some hits that have information about a little thing Mozart and many others did - they had measures that one could use stochastic procedures (rolling dice) to generate phrases - so rather than a "melody generator" it's more of a "phrase" or "piece" generator, but the principles are at least related.

good trick!what a mathematical job!respect to programmers.
it reminds me MAX/MSP for language(note numbers and factors)
and that's cool with the midi file, then we'll be able to add swing later.
but the interface is rough!
did you try harmonization scripts for random melodies in Usine?
they put in some modes: diminished, augmented, limitedVII etc...
so you may find the same kind of Melisma factors in the bassliner, and you can also change any note you want in a wink with the step window.
www.sensomusic.com
it can also write it directly to a piano roll. :hihi:
