Hello!

I have decided to exploit my lack of musical prowess, and get involved with loops.

Since I am primarily an engineer, I havn't really ever used loops. My principal hosts are PT 7.4, and Cubase. I also own FL Studio, but rarely ever use it.

Kindly help me getting started. I would like to start by building a collection of good Drum loops (House and Rock styles for a start), and then move on to Bass and others.

Where are the best sites to get loops (i want to stay away from freebies and get lost with a lot of stuff, initially),

and the best ways to use them within the hosts mentioned ?

The letter L in FLStudio stands for LOOPS. That's what you should use.
I've also noodled a bit with Acid (nowadays by Sony) some 6 years ago.
Very easy to add some loops (got some from my own audio CD collection, intro's and such) and go from there. For private noodling it's much more fun to make your own. Otherwise I predict you'll be collecting & collecting like there's no tomorrow and never use any of it in a song, ever. Better collect stamps then: they may gain value over time.

Some good loop sites are Big Fish Audio, Sony Loops for Acid, Zero-G, etc. Of course, shop around for the best price

hehe.. right! So i need to now read the FL manual... The problem is, FL really never integrated well for me with Cubase, neither in Rewire nor as a VSTi. MAybe move to PT then ?

when u state making ure own loops, u mean using one shot samples in the step seq ? I dont thnk im really any good!

You might have a look at Sony Acid Home Studio, a far less expensive version of Acid Pro that does pretty much everything that really matters.

I'd agree that buying loop libraries is a street without end. Creating your own both gives you control over the types of loops and also gives you valuable experience learning what constitutes quality loops and how to construct them.

I'll probably get some flame for this one, but for great loops, I have two sources:

Paid: Sonic Reality's REX RAW collections. These are amazing, diverse and flexible. Get them here: www.esoundz.com

Free/Magware: Subscribe to Computer Music Magazine. Every month this thing is loaded with tons of loops in many different styles, even ones I never knew existed. My hard drive has a HUGE collection of CM samples and loops. Thankfully GURU really makes it easy to make sense of them all.

Try FLStudio on it's own. It's very capable, but it might take you some getting used to.

Nope, whole sections of audio: one or two seconds, one or two bars. Intros and breaks have usable material. On one track you find some solo drums and on another a solo bassline. Simply mix & match. And ofcourse you can make loops of single-shot samples by simply putting them in a rythmical pattern.
