This is very interesting for me, and I would love to know what the OnBoard audio can do with ASIO4all latency-wise.

I'have tested it with some multitrack sequencers, vst hosts and so far the best one is Ableton Live 5. With (winxp nLite version) asio4all drivers the demo song runs with average 50% cpu usage. Input/Output latency = 16,7ms without audible glitches. If you have an external usb audio device with asio drivers it runs even better (with novation x-station and behringer iaxe393 works very well).
Testing them on the eeepc I have also discovered that the other so called "lightweight sequencers" are not so lightweight. Tracktion, Tunafish, energyXT, Reaper and MU.LAB run considerably slower than Ableton 5. Any suggestion about some other low cpu sequencers I coluld try?

One other thing that could maybe be interesting is that I have tested it with behringer iaxe 393 and guitar rig. The latency is very low and in my opinion you can definetly use the eeepc as a guitar multieffect/amp simulator to play live (with behringer asio driver and the external audio interface of the iaxe 393).

The 900 should be out soon - that's what I'm waiting for. Esp if they add the reversable tablet-like touchscreen they are talking about.

This was asked a few times (even in other forums) but can't seem to find a definite answer anywhere. Gonna pick one of these up eventually and was wondering if anyone has tried it for any standalone ampsim packages. Specifically I'm wonderin if Amplitube 2 will run (either stand alone or as a plug in something like Console) with tolerable latency? Really though I (and I think a lot of others) would just like to hear about the latency experienced with any input monitoring enabled app that people have tried with the eee... thx

i just found out i can run Guitar Rig 3 on my eee 4g via rig control 2 interface as a practice amp in my living room. At 44.1kHz it handles 8ms, HiQ mode off, pretty decent. CPU load usually shows about 30-50%, and from time to time there are dropouts, especially when changing presets or when using the loop machine.
The tools "Astray" and "EEEctl" come in very handy, the first emulates higher resolutions and can watch applications, the latter overclocks the eee cpu to 900mHz via a taskbar tool.

I'm very happy as is, no way i would be using this for more than practice, though.

Thanks! Exactly the info I (and I'll bet a few others) was looking for. I was basically just hoping that I'd be able to use it just to work out presets and mess around with when traveling... not looking to replace my DAW or anything. So 8ms is still pretty playable? I think I run my home machine now at around 3ms, guess I'll bump that up and see how it feels. I actually expected a lot worse. Are you using asio4all? Anyway, thanks again for the reply.... anyone else?

Yeah, I know that an actual 8ms delay is like still being really close to your amp but I'm pretty dubious as to how accurate those "XX ms" measurements are. I can remember back when realtime monitoring was not quite there yet and it would come up that so many feet was how far sound traveled in so many millisecs, and while I can't remember the specifics, I know it didn't really seem to add up as far as real world experience (mine anyway). I know I should just try it, and I will, but it's tax time so I'm on a tight scedule for the next 24 hours! Again though, not trying to be confrontational (I appreciate any input), was just hoping to get more peoples actual experiences with ampsims and the eee. Thanks...

The rig control 2 driver says output latency is 8ms (12ms input to output), whatever this means.
I might not be overly sensitive to latency delays, but for me this is perfectly playable.
You'll need a USB audiointerface though, the input of the onboard soundchip is crap. I think it's mono, and there's some weird compression going on , hardwarewise. As i said, i use the NI Rig Control at home and an old Edirol UA-5 interface at work (live sound recording), both with their own drivers.

Dacaumodo: I have eXT2 on my eee, but didnt test it excessively. I usually use XT as a chainer, so i'm not so familiar with the sequencing side of it. What would you want the eee to do? If you can come up with a test project (with freeware synths/fx) i could try that for you.
