any other track just sounds like shit after this is played.. this guy is a god at production.

the chopping is so good, the kicks don't even sound like kicks. more like stabs of something distorted but they're perfect.

i mean where does someone even start, if wanting to get a sound like this.
I know I know, i should make my own kind of music, but this is the music i love to make.
it's a pretty vague question so maybe someone could help with some advice on the chopping (is it just sliced like in arrange view, and more importantly how does it sound so staccato). and the drums? what are they? they certainly don't sound like drums. is this technique or just really awesome samples.

i know that Sebastian's producing style is to use Logic as a four track. So he will record and then resample his work.

i've heard this too. apparently he learned it from Mr.Oizo. i've got Live7 though, so i don't think there's anyway that'll work lol.

I don't know, I listened to the mp3 example, it gave me a quick jolt, too distorted...

and you can do this in live 7, its quite a simple sounding production. Live is gonna let you make a lot more things than people credit it...

Live is perfect for resampling your work ... that's how I make my tracks.

does resampling mean playing the track that i have , be it bass kick snare, recording it, then pulling that file back into the session and chopping it up.

Totally agree, I kept waiting for it to get impressive, but nope. I would actually rate the production on this very bad as far as my taste goes.

This is pretty cool, imo, but I think it's less about good chopping and more about good samples/source material... find a really nice kick/snare sample like he has there and chop it into a sequence. The hard part is finding the kick/snare I suppose, and indeed I'd love to have a sound like this myself.

pretty cool stuff... it is impressive and yes the production is very slick in that while it has a completely raw in your face feel, everything is spectrally in it's place; nothing is stepping on anything else...which of course can be accomplished by compression tricks, etc. The end result really is nice (regardless of how it was acheived).
Like zircon says, though- it starts with nice samples. (a good understanding of frequency content doesn't hurt either

from 42sec to 1:04min that breakdown section shows how nicely the kick/snare, drone "solo" note and loop work together, all complimentary in frequency content...even as abrupt and in your face it is, nothing clashes. Part of the effect is very precise edits, but the other part is the content of the sound itself. Not accidental

)
Also- I see no reason whatsoever why this sort of thing could not come out of Live 7.

Hmm okay, a topic here aswell. I already answered your thread in the Production Techniques section with a little sample, and to clarify, I did use Live 7 for it and it works wonders. Especially with the new compressor.

The trouble with emulating these french electro tracks is the distortion in my opinion. Have listen to "SebastiAn - Walkman" around the middle when the distorted lead gets going. I have absolutely no idea which plug that might give off such a nasty (in a good way) kind of sound.

For my tracks I used Predatohm, and I have tried out the Ohmicide alittle but I guess I have to dig in a bit deeper to really explore it's potential.

And it's really alot of people complaining about the sound. It's really not supposed to be a polished sound at all, since the whole idea about this new genre is that it's dirty.
Not all people gets a stiff one listening to a mellow countrytrack mixed and mastered by Clearmountain and Ludwig, so suck it up people and accept that a new genre has arrived.

Well, taste aside, I still don't see how its impressive to make a track sound distorted, but whatever, I'll leave you guys to your enjoyment.

I for one love this punky overcompressed sound (even if I do think the particular track you've posted pushes it that little bit too far). I suspect many of the people over at Gearslutz who are complaining about it being music for kids to dance to while off their faces (100% true) are just pissed off that it's not the same music they used to get off their faces to dance to when they were kids.

One thing I've noticed about SebastiAn/Justice et al is that they compensate for the lack of definition caused by the overcompression by really abusing gates. Pretty much all the lines in whatever track cut in and out really harshly, which makes the sidechaining go mental.
