i am looking for a topic about someone with corrupted samples. can't remember who or where and can't find it inside kvr

i remember that he said that somehow his samples got corrupt (maybe because of a defrag experience) and now they sounded like digital noise (he also posted a screenshot of the waveform of one of those samples)

...something similar happened to me today (seems like the sample were broken three days ago because of the "modified date") anyway...if anyone remembers or knows anything about it...

...yeah...i know...this a really stupid and without any details on my problem...but i have no clue about why my song is complete broken

..and no backup this time

...i use beat burner on this file to test it (since it has become free ) i wonder if this happened because of that ???

any info about it ???

I had a hard disk failure, used data recovery software and...
... after this a whole lot of files were recovered. Both good files, and 'melted' pieces of random leftover parts.

It made some strange music, most of it was bad, some was groovy, in an experimental kind of way.

I had 2 drives crashing on me, and a boot virus on the third drive in a period of three months

It said my work back by two months: I had a lot of work to do, to restore my latest monthly back up (which I sadly forgot to make that month), and then I had to compare that back up to the recovered files...

It was a huge task, not a nice one.

But I have installed my OS and applications, tweaked it to my personal taste and made image files of the drive(s).

It was a hard lesson, but a good lesson nonetheless

don't wanna use ghost of norton (don't have it anyway...but they use it at a studio where i work...it sucks in my opinion....norton i mean...don't know about the whole ghost stuff...just the system works in gral)

Hey Kloz,

Ghost wasn't actually written by Norton, it was written by Symantec and bought out a couple of years ago.

Amazingly enough, they didn't manage to butch it up, like their other software. Maybe possible because they kept the symantec staff on crew?

But apart from Ghost, I share your oppinion about Norton system works stuff though.

There is another company called Acronis that make a product that does something similar called "True Image."

I've never actually used it, but it another highly regarded as a backup utility used in the IT industry.

Anyway...

Initially I used Acronis TrueImage to back up my machine, and I would mount one of its virtual drives to recover anything from the host USB drive or compare with what I have online. At some point I started having trouble getting the drives to stay mounted - they would mount and then dismount about 30 seconds later and disappear. Upgrading did not solve the problem.

I switched to larger USB drives and started using FolderMatch and FolderClone to back up various machines. This is not an image backup, but per-file. Because it's a per-file backup, it takes more overall disk space, but it's quicker to back up since both programs are smart about only copying what has changed (they come from the same company).

My backup strategy:

(1) Certain files get replicated between my laptop and desktop machines at home, my office machine and a NAS at the office - largely the "My Documents" directory. I use FolderMatch to keep these synchronized, but Microsoft SyncToy can do it as well. Note that Vista moves Pictures, Music and Videos out of the Documents directory, so it becomes a bit more complicated when trying to sync between XP and Vista machines. This is replicated at least daily. Incidentally, FolderMatch automatically tells me what has changed as part of the sync, and I can decide "copy orphans and replace older files" (usually what I choose) or "make right folder same as left", "copy orphans bidirectionally", "replace older files in left folder" or various combinations depending on what is right at the moment.

(2) I have a dedicated USB drive that I use with FolderClone to back up selected folders on my desktop machine. This machine contains all of my downloaded installers so I don't have to keep them on my laptop, and its drives are shared out to my laptop. I back this machine up every week or two. I used to do this with FolderMatch, but FolderClone has a scheduler and can process multiple backups sequentially without intervention once started. When it's finished I unplug the USB drive.

(2) I have a different dedicated USB drive that I use with FolderClone to back up my Vista-based laptop, about once every week or two.

(4) Periodically (at least once a month) I take the USB drives above in to the office and sync to a USB drive I keep there.

It sounds complicated, but then I'm an IT professional (both career and freelance), so a machine loss affects more than just my music production.

I use Norton GHost...
But not the modern version, but a very old one, that you can install on one (!) diskette/floppy. When I bought it, it came on CD but you could make a bootable floppy. You cannot buy it anymore, I guess.

It works fantastic, never failed on me.

I tried modern GHost, running from the harddrive: I could make an image file, but couldn't restore it...
