Been meaning to post this for a while...

Like the title says, here's a free remix EP, with remixes by KVR's own rosllow, Jazzyspoon, and Runagate. Big thanks to the remixers, excellent work all around!

How cool! 8)

synthgeek, I've been thinking about this since people occasionally ask me what "permissions" they have to use things I was under the impression I made clear I distribute for free, or tricks I consciously am hipping people to use (I am very much not one of those people who hides secret techniqes) or devs who actually ask to host demos that I make for them, and I'm wondering if there's some succinct way to sum up all that, some jargon or other. I am not succinct, as you can see ;)

I figured you'd probably know. Really the only cultural uses of remixing or sampling I am familiar with is using stuff without permission, being that I'm friends with a bunch of hip-hop people who apparently find the topic endlessly fascinating.

Glad you approve, Runny. :)

The best way I could think of to answer your question would be here: http://www.creativecommons.org- the most open license seems to be the Sampling Plus license, it gives permission to sample, remix, distribute, or perform the work in question without restriction.

I downloaded something the other day that had something called, if I recall correctly, the "I don't give a f*ck" license which, surprisingly, actually linked to a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo laying out the license details.

I looked at that license, but I don't think it gives persmission to sell a remix I do. :( I'll have to remember to specify that. If justin3am wants to sell a remix of mine I did of his song, on a CD... I'll have to look into that.

I personally have uploaded my clear remix to my musicfreedom.com account to stream for free and, since I don't own the "rights" to it (I am hazy as to what they'd be anyways, but I just don't care) it cannot be bought, but comes along with whatever "album" I bundled it into which I think costs like $4 or something. No one buys them anyways ;)

The industry shills that blackmail artists into signing over their rights so they can profit from their work in perpetuity makes all of this garbage terribly complicated for us.

I'm sorry that my remix of "fall" was such garbage I don't think I ever even rendered it to an mp3!

I just got invited to do a collab with one of our friends on Myspace that I think will surprise you a lot when and if you hear it.

Now go make some more music, n00b.

:hihi: That's great...

I'm pretty sure there is a CC license that allows for commercial use.

And for future reference for you & everyone else... I really don't give a f**k. If you want to sell a remix I did for you or vice versa, go for it.

Indeed. I hate legal BS.

Yes sir!

PS: no worries about the other remix. I also tried & failed horribly if it makes you feel better. :)

As far as I understand SamplingPlus license allows for commercial use of the samples except advertising, so that should cover selling the remix, but does not allow commercial distribution of the full original file.

If you want to allow any commercial use of the original files or samples, then take the Attribution license (or Attribution-Share Alike).

And if you really want to give up all control, you can use a Public Domain Dedication:
http://creativecommons.org/license/publicdomain-2

although this may not valid outside of the US, while the creative-commons licenses have been implemented in most jurisdictions. But I like this last paragraph in the Public Domain Dedication:
Dedicator recognizes that, once placed in the public domain, the Work may be freely reproduced, distributed, transmitted, used, modified, built upon, or otherwise exploited by anyone for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial, and in any way, including by methods that have not yet been invented or conceived
That should cover everything :hihi:
