What would you guys recommend for mobile recording of "samples"?
I was thinking about getting one of those Roland 2400
but I am leaning more towards just getting some sort of
Rme interface to use with my laptop and nuendo or wavelab..
I have a Edirol R-09 but I need to be able to see and adjust the levels
better and have at least 2 close mics and 2 room mics
and record 4 or more tracks at a time with high quality mics.
Should I just go with a laptop/interface/great preamp set up?

A mobile sample recorder should do the trick.

You can record four tracks at once with the Zoom H2 but only using the built-in mics - that's good quality but not high quality, and it's "surround" (two mics facing to the front, two mics to the back of the unit). Apart from carrying a laptop and an external interface - that's possible, of course - you could look at the newly announced Roland R-44 - no experience available so far but four XLR inputs so meeting your minimum specs.
