Funnily enough, Ive finally almost settled on most of a computerless rig for a similar sort of live improvisation (not for in-front-of-audience use, though), but I feel Ive still got to add 'something' to it, mostly because I want to be able to generate/capture the source material on-the-fly. Basically, working with a KP3 and an ElectroHarmonix 2880 looper, with the Audioweevil and a prodded 'open' JHS delay thru a couple of miniKPs (and a couple of feedback loops) for sources. I think I need something to create a bit more texture in the middle of that.
If this is the streamlined version, how did you have things set up beforehand?

In the past I've used more effects. This time, I only had the one distortion pedal and a reverb unit, but previously I had more effects: two distortion pedals, a delay, and a filter box (I've used the Jomox M-Resonator and the TSP Sloshbox ST in the past). As a result, I relied a little less on distortion this time around. The distortion box I used was also a lot less obvious than what I've used before--I had been using a Devi Ever Aenima for live, and it's fairly aggressive at any setting.

I was going to try to go down to one sampler, and I still might try that, but the two samplers I use only have one stereo output, so unfortunately everything would hit the effects the same way. I get some good mileage out of the KP3, making use of faders, the timeslices and the padmotion a lot.

My current set up is only streamlined in the sense that there are fewer things for me to set up. Most of the people I play with only use laptops, so I'm often "the guy who takes up all the set up time and table space." I've been considering a pedalboard suitcase, which would keep things contained but then I could comfortably have more effects on hand. Trouble is, I wouldn't want anything too cumbersome, I tend to bang my hand on edges and corners all the time while playing, best not to exacerbate that.

After checking out Chris Carter's Chemistry Lessons rig, I've been thinking of getting something like the U73 oscillator, to have at the ready to hum in/out of the background.

Thanks, Jazzy. There are two or three transitions I wasn't happy with, but some of them turned out quite well I thought. I'm going to aim for fewer fades next set.

The crowd was focused on the performers, mostly. Still a lot of talking, and this venue is really long, so the people at the front of the place could hear the music, but mostly as background sounds.

I had. I went with the MPC instead as it has velocity sensitive pads, a better sequencer and more extensive sample editing functions. I use the Kaoss Pad mostly as a sampler, but I originally got it for its effects. Then I realized I didn't love its effects, but really liked some of the built-in sampler functions. From what I remember of the 404, I liked its effects better.

One thing I don't like about the 404, and it's something I dislike about the Kaoss Pad, too, is that the I/O audio jacks are all RCA. Everything else I own uses 1/4" jacks, irritating to have get special cables for these things.

Thanks for the info. I'm doing a "sound art" project and I'm thinking I would rather use a portable phrase sampler than my laptop with an external soundcard.

I can't remember the memory capacity of the 404, that might be an issue if it's low, but otherwise certainly it's worth considering for the job. I appreciate not being tied to a screen when playing, I'm at a screen quite a lot day to day.
