chicken muffin wrote:this is what you do cypherone. take a break from writing music. don't open your host again till you want to. not when you feel like it. definitely don't open any songs your working on because the more you listen to it, the more you will start to hate how it sounds and you will find more and more problems with the structure, melody, (insert problem here).

you will know when its time to start writing again because you will crave it.
till you crave it, find something else to do, (i do graphic art with sketchup and listen to music) i also create models with eitech which is a meccano like toy. maybe you like writing? maybe you like playing games. whatever you do stay away from your daw and focus on other hobbies. when you focus your mind on other
hobbies, you get cravings for ones that your not currently doing.

think of your creativity like a battery, the more use it, the more you use up.
thats why you always have to keep a backup battery. that being another hoby you enjoy :)
And why don't you try with another style of music? maybe if you start making another genre you will increase your skills 8)

^Good suggestion Jesus

Why people feel the need to pigeonhole themselves in one style of music is beyond me. Or for that matter feel the need to compare themselves to other composers/performers. The Stray Cats were anything but hip when they hit the music scene. They gained popularity not by caving to norms but standing on thier own ground and most importantly playing what they felt.

This is an interesting topic. I've taken a long vacation (about 3 months so far) from music. I was studying jazz composition, and making tracks influenced by my studies, but I needed a break. I was too overwhelemed with life at that point. The reason I switched to jazz was because I wanted to hone my written composition skills and put a temporary end to just making hip-hop/trip-hop/experimental music. I'm always trying to outdo myself becasue I get tired of some of the tracks I come up with as I tend to get stuck in certain patterns (track layout).

I come back to it sooner or later. But I definatley recommend taking a break.

I'd say it the opposite for me really. The more I work (or try to work), the more gets done.

Agreed on the backup hobby, always a good thing to have.

(I don't have one though)

I once was lamenting how popular music keeps using the same simple chord structures, and a coworker of mine couched it in these terms: A great painter can paint some amazing things while only using the color blue.

I love your music. You show an incredible innate understanding of rhythm and textures. I can put your stuff in a loop and work the whole afternoon without getting tired of it.

But you are like that artist, and you have grown tired of always the same color.

My advice is to grab some technical books on music structure and composition. Study cadence and/or modulation for instance. Find something new that grabs your attention and play with it. Make each song an experiment with no real intention of actually making a song out of it. My favorite times writing music were when each song was an experiment of some kind.

That was back when software synths were just a dream, and all I had was a Sound Canvas. I'm getting back into music now, and I also find the choice of instruments/patches to be very daunting, and at the same time I love all the possibilities.

It's music like yours that is compelling me to start again.

Another idea: write a few songs with nothing but a piano. That way you won't get distracted with all the synth choices, and you won't find it too easy to fall back into the same patterns you are so used to.

maybe do some pastiches, e.g., what if Oscar Levant and Stevie Wonder had collaborated
