You need to construct/get a real HyperSID hardware unit to be able to use the VSTi...b-real wrote:Did anyone try the new one that just came out

u can make it a little better in a system setting of SidStation. background noise is less a problem imho than quirky timing (midi note triggering is somehow clumsy)... above all elektron sidstation is rather a waste of money for me now, not a fantastic hw synth (paid 900$)..deastman wrote:SidStation gives you dirty, grungy sounds
need to put a gate on it permanently in order to make it useable.

I am a big QuadraSID fan. you need to really spend some time with it to get it to do what you want. I think it is worth it. I have been using it with Dominion and getting a little more of the "dirt" people desire from SID sounds.

If you want to go the hardware route, there is a sequel to the Prophet64 cartridge called MSSIAH. Best of all, it is just a cartridge. No soldering or threat of house fire. MSSIAH sounds like it will have MIDI input. An the Prophet64 was fairly inexpensive, so hopefully MSSIAH will be too.

thanks for that. having a real c64 is still the best option. there are dozens of old c64 music apps to explore..
maybe i could compare my amiga500/1200 to c64 sid. used to make music with protracker and i am still amazed about its unique sound quality (nothing sounds like my old amiga!).
real c64 are fading away thu, these machines are mostly 20-30 years old...they're still way rougher than currently produced slip formed lollipop laptops of course.

I can also vote for the ucapps mbSID project. There's a VSTi control device available for the 1-chip version. Unfortunately it's Windows only as it's a SynthEdit GUI/control solution, but you get the best of both worlds: a real analog SID chip (which is why the sound is so "dirty", as it's analog circuity), and a digital control interface (the VSTi remote).
And it's a lot cheaper than most other hardware solutions. You only need to have some soldering skills.
Else there're the usual suspects (like QuadraSID), and also the one from L-DAY, the PURE6581. It's not the best one IMO, but another possible alternative.

Odo has a brand new C64 synth called '38911 Bytes' that is well worth checking out - sounds just as good as Unknown 64 Pro but with a more intuitive interface.
It's donationware, the free version is fully functional but you can't tweak the presets.

IMO, Odo's SIDmulations come closer than QuadraSID, although that is pretty good too. Of course, if you don't mind the time and effort you can get an actual C-64 working without dropping a whole lot of bank. But it's not going to be as reliable or easy to integrate into a DAW as a VSTi. And the SID chip itself is pretty noisy so you'll have to gate it. But I suppose that's part of the charm of the little bugger.
Anyway, Odo's stuff is enough for me to get the sounds I spent years getting out of my C-64 by poking and peeking and eventually going for straight 6510 assembly.
