A Bump for the *Uber-Cool-double-dot* feature!

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll put it on the list (no promise here).
NO: thank you for thinking about it.

BTW 'Density' is the only-right name for this processor. I did understand it only by tweaking it, not just reading about it. Simply put it's just the right thing it does: add density to the sound. Thanks!

wow. it rocks. that's all I can say.

Well. I guess I could also say that I like the phat feature.

bootsie, this is a work of art. My gratitude to you!

Glad you like it!

So, meanwhile I've just setup the new and proposed uber-cool channel/compression mixer here in my lab and it works now like this:

green dot: controls each channels compression (use shift+leftmouse)
red dot: same as in the old mixer = each channels volume (use ctrl+leftmouse)

reset (doublerightclick) works already the same way as before but just the appropriate metering (compression and gain reduction indication) causes me some headache at the moment.

The image shows the usecase which started this discussion: The green dot is in straight 'S' position (upper right corner), so only the side signal get's compressed. The red dots position indicates that just a small amount of compressed 'S' is mixed into the LR signal (as well as some even smaller 'M' amount).
The other way around (compressing e.g. the shit out of the MID and mix it back to some LR drums with some S on top) works of course as well and so on ...

So how does it sound???

UBER-COOL !!!

It works out really, really nice! And put the trafo on top, haha - instant 3d imaging and depth in the mix, oh boy! If I was a company and had a marketing department they would definately party this night

To calm down a little bit: The shown example above sligthly but so nicely improves the stereo image of a mix in an absolutely natural fashion. I will put this (and some other) examples as a preset in the plugin.
Unbelievable, there is so much potential in working with M/S in a proper way.

I just hope, this is not too confusing to all the users.

Thanks for your inspiration!! :tu:

peace,
bootsie

P.S.: need some testers around this weekend - PM me.

Yep, Mid-Side compression is extremely useful, like I said. This is one of the main charms of FabFilter Pro-C, completely and fully customizable mid-side processing. You can have the mid trigger the side and vice versa.

Anyhow, your solution seems very elegant! Can't wait to try it out. :)

Cheers!

100% agree; this kind of compression togheter with parallel, N.Y. or whatever we call the dry-wet mix is the 'right cocktail' (imhofcourse ;-) )

Neat implementation indeed!

Big Thanks!

You're continuing the TbT tradition of releasing magnificent free plugins.

Using this on a 2bus from a group of rhythm guitars mixed in parallel. Definetly adds some "Density" and did what i was looking for after auditioning a few other compressors.

So only that mid signal goes through the sidechain and compresses the side signal (and only that), right? For what is that usefull in practice - do you have an example?

Yes, I actually have an example somewhere in the compressor thread.. it's useful for dance music because having the center kick drum compress the sides only you make the kick sound more "focused" and centered, only during it's hit! It's an awesome "pumping" trick.

Lemme dig out the example..

A full explanation of the why's and how's + audio examples of everything can be found here

What is the the difference between performing such a thing (Mid-Side compression) "In house" within the plug (like in Pro-C or as in the forthcoming feature in Density - hi Bootsie :D) rather then doing so "outside" with plugs like MSED and sidechain compression ? (other then it being more comfortable, of course...)

Post

external should be no problem as long as delays are properly compensated and tools doesn't phase.
You'll run into problems if selected tools touches the phase (differently). At least you have to deal with unwanted sideeffects.

nice weekend

I finally remembered to try this out, it's awesome. Stuck it on the master bus, cranked the ratio all the way up. Cool!

Well, the main difference is the actual sound of the compressor. The example in the thread was given before the release of Pro-C. Naturally I would have used Pro-C if that had been around at that time. :D

I chose Voxengo Crunchessor because of it's rather aggressive sound to make the example as obvious as possible. Also, you need a compressor with a user selectable sidechain input to do it yourself within a modular host.
