Most robot voices by daft punk are talk boxes.
I think the reason vocoders like orange and the microkorg one are considered good is because they are so simple, in the sense that they leave little room for people to f**k with things they should leave put for a basic pristine sound. The imageline vocoder is fantastic - you just have to really take the guesswork out of all its bandwidth and filter parameters.

You also have to keep in mind that most "classic", "vintage" analog vocoders only had 8 filter bands, or 16 at most. In contrast, your average VST vocoder uses 512-1024 bands of FFT analysis. I'm not suggesting that one is better than the other, but the approach is substantially different.
