Hi LtZ and thanks :)

Perhaps now is a good time to give Zebra a closer look then. Get the demo and get on with it....

May one use compression, EQing, external reverb?

May one sing?

Post

I'm planning on using a tiny bit of EQ just when sound frequencies overlap. Compression and reverb can drastically change a sound and singing isn't one of Michael's presets, so I'd think no. :)

It's up to the boss though.

EQ'ing? :o

:x

if he can i can!!! :hihi:

Nopes and nope and nopes.

Would love to hear people singing but it takes the focus away from the sounds, so i would have to say no singing.

I know most people would prefer to use their standard setup whatever that includes but the whole point of the competition is to see what people come up with when all have the same starting point and tools.

To compensate for the EQing which we cant do you have to think i levels. Example, want more highs then turn up the hihat and perhaps add some high pitched noise from the Drum-Noise patch. Want more dirt in the kick use same Drum-Noise patch at low keys and dub the kick.

The only allowed external thing is a limiter so you can bring your total mix up in volume. You can choose to abuse that limiter to come up with a very pumped mix but still, its the demo soundset and 1 limiter. Thats all.

If you dont know where to look for special sounds then try pitch sound extreme high or low by using pitch bend. Dont forget that many sounds come with XY controls which can alter a sound quite drastic.

Obvious things like adjusting attack or release or ARP tempo is ok.

In short its the 44 patches, and 1 limiter.

Kool :)

so attack & release is cool on all patches :) (amp only i guess?)

just to check is it ok to just disable arp's all together & play your own sequence?

this contest is fun :)

i already like allot my my little teaser :D (great patches!!)

What about slight inbuilt EQ changes where the preset already have the EQ module inserted in Zebra? So using the zebra EQ only...no external EQ. Is this possible.

Another question, can we render down something and then reverse it? I know this one might be pushing it ;)

Post

May one... no ok, I'll just start working already :D

Attack and Release is ok on AMP only, just to sync better with what ever you doing. VCF is a no no, too much color here can alter the sound too much.

But some patches do have XY control for VCF so try stick to them for resonance sounds.

Intern EQ OK
Disable ARP or change tempo on ARP OK
Attack and Release on AMP module OK
IF a patch comes with FX you may adjust delay and reverb.
IF a patch comes with no FX you may not add any type of FX.

Reverse mix not ok.

What ever you do must sound exactly the same on another persons system if you provided him the midi file and notes about the slightly altered patches.

I'll sum it up in the initial starting post.

For those who are more on the experiment side of life i made a soundscape as an idea for starting somewhere:

Using the Emulation-Brass at very low keys for kick and Pad-Digital for bas.

"Poly-Gate" preset hangs in energyXT 1.4 on my machine. The sequence continues to play even when there are no longer any midi notes send to it.

Just thought I'd mention it.

Hmmm try change the trigger mode on MSEG1+2+3 for that patch. There are 3 modes which the MSEG is triggered, single, poly, mono.

OK.

OK here's my entry:

http://vimcortez.free.fr/tracks/oldskooldemoMS.mp3

8 instances of Zebra (plus a bounced track from the cymal preset)

tweaked internal reverb and delay in most presets, a little internal EQ here and there and some enveloppe parameters, but well within the rules, I think.

I added a compressor / limiter on mix (Dominion), I hope that's alright.
