I used a GM soundfont to create some orchestral instrument tracks for a piece, but compared to other VSTs that I used the quality isn't that good. There just isn't the presence or the fullness of sound that I'd like to hear.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do to improve the quality?

The problem can be related with poor recording/sampling, low sample rate... in this case there's nothing you can do.
You can try to layer the SF sounds with other similar sounds with better quality. I use often low quality sounds in layer with good sounds in my orchestral compositions because this give to the song a more realistic touch. What is the GM soundfont we are talkin' about? And what genre of music?

Don't know that the quality is that terrible, just not as bright as I'd like it and maybe not as full sounding. Sample rate sounds OK - it's something like 160MB of soundfont and I don't think it's that bad.
I could layer stuff but I'm being lazy and want to see if I can do something that might just make them sound a little better. The instruments that I'm using are violin, french horn, oboe and flute.

If the problem is brightness then you can try a little bit of EQ in the right frequencies. But my suspect is that the problem is related with the sample rate: a lot of soundfonts have samples with scaled down sample rates, and this affects the brightness of the sound, specially on the instruments you are using. You can try a program like Awave to take a look at the samples of your SF bank.
My suggestions are:
try to correct the sound with EQ
or
try to correct the sound layering other sounds
or
search the web for better SF to replace your instruments. There's a lot of good stuff around. Take a look at www.sf2midi.com
