I have been doing this in modular hosts for so long i didn't really realize it. But now that i think about it yeah. About time. Think about this:
You can now, with the help of a modular host, chose exactly how much and from what part of the stereo spread, a band reacts to the incoming signal. This is VERY useful for mastering where you might want to make sure that the lowest band only reacts to the mid/mono information and is completely separated from the rest of the bands (unlinked). You can then route your own chosen mix of mid/side information to the rest of the bands and also choose how much you want them to be linked (cross feed of input signal).
The creative possibilities are enormous:
You can now make drum busses/loops/whatever pump in a never before heard way by making the bass stay steady (not reacting to the element of input that makes the compressor "pump") but instead make only the mid-band or top-band do that 'breathing' pump thingy. I'm sure this can be dialed in to sound awesome!
Anyhow, it boggles my mind that so few see the potential here..
I'll definitely add some audio examples and explanations to the "all about compressors thread", as soon as I have had some time playing around with this beast.
