I think this one came out pretty good with no suggestions other than MAYBE a thicker snare with less release/decay and about 2 octaves lower. BUT that will require lots of EQ'ing. Good job Mario :)

Thank you Michael, I was expecting more comments - maybe the song ended up with a good overall sound for real :).

2 Octaves lower for the snare? R U Sure? Maybe you mean two semitones ot two tones?

- Mario
It just came out nice and full so no reason to change anything :) About the snare thing well i do mean 2 octaves lower, the best thing i can compare it to right now is Prince - When Doves Cry

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 1326161348

But as i said that will require extreme EQ'ing and no garantie it will come out right ;)

I like your track. Like the violin-like parts. Your kick is just right IMO. I might have done the snare brighter myself, rather one octave or to up than down.

I might have panned the melodic parts a little more, but I'm really nitpicking. Really like what you did here.

I like how it fades out in the end too.

To me it's instrumental synth-pop...

great stuff!

Thank you! I would have liked to do much more with EQ, filter and effects (trance gates, autopans and so on) but I wanted to stay with the presets as they are as much as possible. As I said before, this is a very interesting contest in that it makes you get as much as you can from a well defined set of sounds and techniques. Really cool things to learn here :)

3rd Entry:
When It Is Over (1:00, 1.4MB 192kbps mp3)
Just a short one (I like to do these in threes when possible).
6 oldskool demo patches. There's a slight internal EQ boost on the Drum-Kits patch at approximately 175 hz; other than that the patches are unmodified.
mkastrup wrote:Yap i like this better, gives more room. BTW, the T O M S originates from which patch ? I like em a lot :)
All of the drums are from the Drum-Kits patch.

Nice one Echo, its got a kinda calm video track feel.

About the toms, my bad... i completely forgot about the kit had toms
Ohh well, good thing i like my own toms :hihi:

Now when hearing all these tracks it reminds me of the 80's where you could clearly spot an instruments from it sounds. Like the Korg M1 and Roland R8 factory sets. I think its near impossible to do that today because these instruments have been sampled to death so its hard to figure out if its the original or just a sampled version put down in some instruments.

I have the same question. Michael, you said you, Urs, and forum members are going to vote. How do forum members vote? Why would a forum member vote for anyone other than him-or-her-self? When will the vote take place :?:

In the monthly music contest, a vote for self (or no vote at all) results in disqualification. Thus, every participant is motivated to vote. No guarantees that someone wouldn't vote strategically, of course; that comes down to the integrity of the individual voter.

I don't know that this is how it'll be done here, of course; just mentioning one possible scenario.

Some nice stuff :)

but there go my chances of winning :(

How, where, and when do I vote then? How will I know what the songs are, other than by sifting through this forum topic. Will someone ultimately provide a list of all the songs so I can listen to them in sequence?

Again, not trying to speak for anyone else, but I strongly suspect that when the submission deadline passes (May 11th), Michael will probably post instructions for voting to this thread. Just gotta wait another week.

After the deadline i'll post voting instructions. Each of you have one vote, you cant use it on yourself thou ;)

Emotion through Electronic Harmonics (zebra2 oldskool entry)

17 instances of Zebra2

1x Drum-Kick (pitched down slightly - 0.20)
2x Bass-Seq (arp disabled)
1x Lead-Clean (modulating the onboard EQ 'live' as the patterns playback)
1x Pad-Stack (very short Attack and Release - using it as a rhythmic 32-note melody instead of a pad)
1x Pad-Voc (using as normal :c)
1x Drum-Hihat (closed hat ticky sound)
1x Drum-Kit (using F#5, G5, A5 as a 16th note supporting rhythm to the Drum-Hihat closed hat)
1x Drum-Noise (my closed hat/shaker sound, low velocity on each 4th note, higher velocity in between)
2x Bas-Saw (cut the release a bit, one on main bassline, other using it with my pattern slid to the right and the volume lowered to give a delay-like sound to the main bassline w/o using a delay)
2x Lead-Distortion and 1x Poly-Digital (playing arpy up/down melody, 1 of the Lead-Dist has a tweaked onboard EQ in the high register)
1x Drum-Clap (handclappy sound :cP)
1x Pad-Digital and 1x Emulation-Guitar (used for the melody near the last half of the song, quick attack on Pad-Digital)

enjoy. :) I know I did while using the patches.. I don't get a lot of inspiration to write songs these days, but this came to me quickly when using the oldskool demoset.. so much that I plan to expand upon this song in ways I cannot due to the contest rules. very good work in those patches though.. very, very good.

VitaminD, thou you describe what you did with each patch in detail it still comes out as recognizable sounds. Genre is kinda melodic soft trance to me. Good job and nice theme. I cant find anything i would change.

Hello Michael,

I've reworked my contest entry and uploaded version 2.

It's here: http://download.yousendit.com/9AD41A8F23B60E3F

Now I've added another more "classical" melody part and an alternative bass line of a slap-bass-y kind.
I'm not sure about whether to keep the fast accented bassline automation before and during the second bigger break at around 03:20, 03:40 and 04:10.
Furthermore I'm not certain about the slap bass line at around 04:30.
Do you think those ideas are okay?

stay tuned,
HiEnergy

At first i thought why the slapbas but when i heard it, it came out nicely. I only wish i had put one of the Bassline patches in the demo, then you would have had much more room to build up the bass theme. Would love to hear you using a bassline patch but that would have to wait until competition is over ;)
