I just got some Tannoy system 800 passive monitors off ebay for 400 bucks.
http://imlc.rutgers.edu/recordingarts/tannoy800.pdf

I've been doing side by side comparison with my yorkvilles.

Well....initially the yorkvilles sound more exciting, but testing out my mixes demonstrates that compared to the tannoys they are mid scooped and sizzly and really quite coloured. They make overdriven guitars and basses sound good - but scooped. I had been aggresively boosting lower mids to compensate and this was obvious on the tannoys with quite a bit of clogging. Also, my mixes are often lacking air above 10k, due to the yorkies quite sizzly highs. Yorkies are not known as an especially hyped monitor so I dread to think what a 'very' hyped boom-tsk one would sound like. Vocals sound much more natural on the tannoys.

By comparison the Tannoys are reserved, smooth and make vocals sound much more accurate. The soundstage is bigger and reverbs much clearer. Switching to them after listening to the yorkvilles, they sound pulled back....
switching back to the yorkvilles after sitting with the Tannoys for about half an hour...
"oh god, how could I have mixed on these??!!!!"
LOL

Of course, theres the sobering knowledge that there are monitors out there which might cause the same reaction when a/b-ing with the Tannoy....maybe.....

Ive got the Blue Sky Media desk. Nothing else will give you a reasonably accurate response from 35 hz - 20 khz in this price range. the sound amazing and translate well to other speakers. They are a speaker you will want to get to know better.

ok so if anyone is interested, here is my verdict on these nice little monitors..(and they are little)

Im no audio genius but they sound great and have set of switches on the back for spacial settings depending on where youre placing the speakers in relation to walls etc. They have a clip light on each speaker which will turn red when over loaded. Not bad for £133 as reference monitors but as far as power is concerned, that really is all they can do. But great budget option for a home studio i say.

Well after 4 years (and doing a degree in music tech) I thought it was time to update my lovely old shitty bose monitors.

been reading through this lovely list and so far the Krk 6's are looking good. Can get them for around 362 Euros from here:

Looks like a good deal. Anyone recommend them (or something else) other then the nice review on the first page?

I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned the new Mackie MR line:

Even though they are Mackie's, I've changed my wishlist to KRK's, probably the RP6's. Like the above posted mentioned I haven't heard great things about the HR line, which makes me doubt this MR line but I thought I'd post it anyways just for info's sake.

The RP6's are inexpensive yet get great reviews and cheap enough that to add a sub wouldn't break the bank if needed later. However, I don't see a single KRK speaker for sale over at Sweetwater anymore - I wonder what gives?

Blue Sky monitors are the best for the money imo.

In summary, anyone using:

- used audiophile speakers (Paradigm, B&W, Axiom) as monitors
- old JBL/Urei/Tannoy monitors from the 70s'80's?

logic suggests there were some perfectly excellent designs from the past 30 years.
I use a pair of passive Magnavox speakers I found in a pawn shop for $50 bucks. Accordion cone 10" speakers with 10"x4" horns. They are a little huge WHD 12.5" x 20" x 11" to sit on a desk and they look like ass.

I don't have to use these old relics and I tried to replace them a few years ago with something smaller but they sound better than anything else I've tried. I have a friend that has a pair of those classic JBL 4312 studio monitors that I love and I like the Magnavox set better. They may be the best sounding speakers/monitors I've ever had.

You can still find 4312s for $600-$800 a pair. I don't have the slightest clue what the Magnavox model # is.

I did some research a few months ago. I wanted some monitors but didn't have the cash for the best available. It seems thed KRK Rokit 5's were highly praised, and often stated as the best VFM. I also read 6 inch woofer is a minimum requirement for bass response (who knows if it's true) so I went for the KRK Rokit 6's. I am more than happy with them and can't see the need for another set unless I come into huge amounts of cash..

JBL4312's were my very firstmonitors (I didn't build) needed them to impress the clients etc.
They excessively hype the high end (i.e all my mixes sounded kinda flat and lifeless on the radio)
I was very happy to be rid of them.

I own TAPCO S8, I really love them because they are flat response but the bass is perfect because the response stills flat and the bass is really pumping! so you will not imagine anymore how would sound the bass, Maybe TAPCO is not the coolest name for a brand but trust me... I produce Hip Hop, R&B, Reggaeton and Electronic Music so I need a great bass response... tapco S8 gives me that punchy bass that all my older monitors didn't gave me ;)

If you produce music with lots of low frequencies I recommend you TAPCO S8 ;)

If you produce jazz or country or pop or maybe punk... maybe you don't need too much bass and you would be happy with Event Project Studio 8 / Event TR8 / KRK RP8 / KRK VXT/ M-audio BX8a Deluxe and M-audio EX66

All those monitors are great!

But if you are a Dj and you really wanna know how will sound your bass in a club or your car, your best choice is

8) 8) 8) TAPCO S8 8) 8) 8)

Hey, I'm interested in getting some studio monitors and I don't want to make a new topic.

What would you get if you were to choose between:
- E-MU PM-5 Pack + Subwoofer (PS-12)
- Blue Sky Media Desk 2.1
- ESI nEar05 eXperience + ESI SW10K
- M-Audio BX8a + BX10S
- Fostex PM2 + PM0.5 Subwoofer

Suggestions are welcome. But anything within the budget required for any of the ones above.

I picked these because they're the most tempting at the local store. I can also get some KRK RP's from elsewhere.

I must mention that the styles of music I'm interested in are techno and ambient.

Thank you kindly.

Has anyone tried the Yamaha HS80m? How do these compare to some of the other monitors in this thread?
