Of all the white hot 80's jazz players his is really the most endearing to me.
His playing had two things something many of his followers didn't get which is grace and melody.
Gambale should have been on a steely dan record.

That is amazing shit!!!

Gambale is 'Mr. Mode'. Knows his stuff.
Not a big fan of his tone, but he's an amazing technician.

Not sure if Mr. Gambale invented it...check out this clip of Chet Atkins doing sweeps in 1975 (at 1:14) :-o He was ahead of his time...broke all kinds of new ground.

Agreed. Have you seen Tommy Emmanuel? Mr. Atkins bestowed the "CGP" title on him (Certified Guitar Player). This version of "Classical Gas" is insane!

Talk about phrasing...keeping the rhythm flowing without a drummer/bass player, just flying by his internal metronome and feel. Just awesome.

Of course he didn't, there's loads of Jazz players that did so earlier. But he made it a somewhat "carefully explored" technique.

Btw, another vote for both Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel (which isn't only a great player but a fantastic musician all around and apparently an incredibly fine guy, too).

Those who can do maths and those who can't.

Micheal Schenker on UFO's Stangers in the night double live album

George Lynch on Dokken's Beast from the East

I also saw Blues Saraceno play live with Jack Bruce's band circa '93 - amazing but never saw him replicate it on any of his studio albums.

I agree with most of the mentioned brothers...Here's a golden one for the jazz people : Joe Pass... Find his records with NHØP and be amazed.

Another great phraser is Neil Young when he does the loud rock thing with Crazy Horse... Weld is brilliant.
