This is a great thread!

Please let me know how the build of the hardware unit designs go/are going.

It is so cool to hear of people with those skills to create their own custom units based on the designs of the schematics.

I think by this time next year, what Nebula can do now for preamps and eq's and lighter limiting/compressing, it will be able to do with great complexity and accuracy, for more complex compression units like the 33609 (and hopefully someone with a LOT of hours on their hands will tackle a complete series of API 2500's :) ).

For now, the primary focus is definitely on the signal chain, bc that is something that can help DAW users NOW, to bring a very detailed level of analog functionality to everything they record. But, in addition to that, the full library elements of tape for group bus and individual line drive/signal path presets that focus on even more complex circuitry minus eq- make the idea customizable, flexible, and I think the user will be able to work with a full range of accuracy that wasn't available before. The compressors are included mainly because they came out so much better than I thought they would. They are definitely the 'added bonus' of the collection, and only very specific presets that really did what was meant to be achieved, are included. There are 4 1176-style presets that all together, add up to a range of things the true unit can do. The UAD-1 was helpful to try and measure this and sample this, but nothing ended up being directly sampled just from the plug-in comps. By next year, I think Nebula will be able to just directly sample outboard and plug-in comp settings without the tweaking it took me- and that tweaking was purely trial and error by listening... over and over:)

As far as the full library release- the time is nearer! There will be a release of information very very very soon.
Thank you so much for the input in this thread- I really hope that the collection is something that gets people excited about working in their DAW environment.

Wow! I just got done reading this thread and this new technology sounds very exciting Zaphod!

I am a Electrical Engineer and Musician whom owns a project studio, but didn't hear about acusticaudio until I went searching around for info on Dynamic Convolution. I am very glad I found this because it sounds like this technology is even more powerful than Sintefex and Focusrite has to offer!

This is perfect timing for me because I am putting together a very brief presentation on 'Characterizing a Non-Linear system using Dynamic Convolution' and would like to add information about volterra kerneling. After reading the Sintefex Article, i was starting to think wait this Dynamic Convolution thing doesn't sound all that powerful, and was even a little disappointed. ...Well I may have to pm you with a couple questions if that is ok?? I just found a couple AES documents to get me started.

Also what is the quickest way to get up and running with your software? Should I buy Neb 2 or 3? Will my AMD64 be able to handle the DSP requirements?

Post

hi,
- that's fine, pm to me
- nebula3
- there is an AES convention paper regarding nebula (october 2007)
- we are doing something more powerful than "volterra kernels", we have a sort of "dynamic volterra kernels" with time-variance support

About the cpu, there is an huge difference using an "old" cpu or a new one (for example a quadracore). The gap is even bigger if you own a new nvidia video card, since nebula is now ready for gpu computing (just google "cuda"), there is a component available for customers named "nebula cuda bridge".

whoa :D

didnt know about CUDA...when i saw the download i wore my typical "what the hell is this" face and didnt get deeper about..
thats nice..is there a list of Nvidia cards compatible with CUDA somewhere, by any chance? or a general rule for compatibility?
(sorry for the dumbass questions)

Peace

YES THERE IS

Gian, I haven't been on the subject for quite a while.

What are the CURRENT performance gains for CUDA enabled nVidia cards ?

Post

CRAP! I still run on a Nvidia GeForce 5700 (no gamer PC after all), but if Nebula uses the GPU as DSP chip, I'm so game!

And I'm on Quadro 560 - which is not CUDA enabled (not enough RAM)

actually we are supporting cuda 1.1, a list of supported gpu cards is available on nvidia website

around twice for a core duo + geforce 8800 gts

WHA

So, lets say I can ran 40 instances of AC's on my QuCo 6600.... on GeForce 8800 GTS it will be 80 ?? :o
(maybe more cause the quad)

BTW

The BAE1073 is like.... YUMMY :o

Ah luv it ! :hyper:

well, we should test it, and sometimes (due to errors) there is no performance gain. For this reason we suggest to download the bridge and test
* new nvidia cards are coming
* we'll migrate soon to cuda 2.0 (so it will be better and better)

I should definitely bug my friend about his old graphics card, but if I insert it, then my PC will be even more buggy than it already is. Then agian, if it's worth the efforts and I can run Nebula on my PC, but the GPU is the DSP for Nebula... I'm cool with that, even if I have to reauthorize all my C/R plugins.
