My second VST is called SKdrummer.

Image

It's a sample based recreation of the percussion sounds of the infamous Casio SK-1.

It has a kick, two snares, open and closed hi-hats, and three toms. Each drum has its own volume and pitch control.

Made with Synthedit.

Let me know how it works.

You can listen to a quick demo and download the BETA on the page:

This is kind of Cool! I have a real Casio SK-1 stuffed away in the Basement somewhere? Might have to dig it out for Shits and Giggles. 8) :hihi:

Looks nice dude. Will test this one.
Best regards from Johan Brodd.

Thanks guys.

The pitch control drops really low so you can get all kinds of crunchy sounds.

Should I add pan control into the next version?

You have no idea how much of my music was written and recorded with the SK1 (and its brother SK8), you can't imagine how exciting it is to me to have those drum sounds again - thanks, thanks!!!!!!!!

I loved this thing too.

Keepin' the dream alive!

(hey MAC --- you might like my Toy Piano VST too...)

Post

I thought about it, actually, as I also used to play with a toy piano, one of those white and pink plastic things for very small children, I haven't downloaded it so far because I'm not sure it is that kind of thing... is it?
If it is, I'll try it for sure!! :)

(By the way, those toy pianos had some metallic bars inside that vibrated when hit - that's the way they worked. However, if you opened one (=destroyed it) and took out those bars, you could get some very spooky chime/bell sounds by hitting the bars with another metallic object - great sound!)

Post

Just downloaded it and tried it - yes, it's exactly that piano! Thank you, really, lots of memories here, too!! (uhmm-... I wonder if I could make a track using SKdrummer and Toy Piano together... stimulating :) )

very nice thx also the demo on your site is very well done, really enjoyed
will try the plug soon

Much appreciated, I love jamming on cheap electronic drums. There were some Casio Rapman samples posted recently, or linked to from Rekkard.

Mars - I see you have a link to an organ blog...

Check out this from my own blog:

(I gutted a Lowrey and put it in a new case...)

If someone wants to send me a circuit bent SK-1, I'll do it.

:D

I was thinking of circuit bending one myself. I make a lot of electronics so it wouldn't be much of a stretch. There is a lot of documentation out there.

Thanks for the feedback.

Any bugs?

Any feature ideas?

I wish you had a picture of the recased Lowrey - that would go great on Organ*Pron!!

Great story, great songs!

The circuit bent SK-1:
A basic circuit bent SK-1 VSTi would have to be a sample player (with a lo-fi recorder if you're adventurous) with all of the SK-1 sounds and then a random appegiator 12 point 'patchbay'(lit up buttons would do fine) that diced the chosen sounds and played them back all screwed up. It would also need to have a bit crusher option (to simulate the body contacts).

A more involved bent SK-1 would include a 24 point patchbay and a sequencer.

Here are some pictures to fire your imagination:

The 'Antithesizer' by Daniel Parks (aka Spunky Toofers). Very much the model I think should be used.

Here's one by Caspar Electronics

Here are some out of control video's

This is actually THREE cheapies (sk1, sk5, vss-30) built into one massive modular interface. Awe inspiring.

Here's a well bent SK-1 by Oceanus with a sequencer and patchbay

It's funny how you don't get pictures of the important things in life...

I almost didn't write the post because I couldn't find a single picture of the re-cased Lowrey. Blogging has helped me start to keep better records of all the projects I get myself into.

... for instance ...

I can't find the plastic pink Barbie phone I used to jack into my guitar and scratch on with a whammy pedal. I have a recording ... but the phone is gone.

:(

Well, some record is better than no record at all, Arman.

How about these SK-1's eh?
