hey amiga909... where does one find the snippet2 of which you speak?...been searching for a bit in all the expected places (fxpansion [PC] link is dead, not on smartelectronix site, not on gersic...) me curious. had not heard of that one!

- A sampler: Simpler (Live), FL's incorporated
- Granular synthesizer: do one in Reaktor
- 303 emulator: ASM (or a REAL 303)
- Delay with millisecond option: most delays have this
- Glitch-useful plugins: dblue Glitch, the delaMancha stuff (props)
- Drum synth/sampler: ErsDrums, iDrum, GURU, Drumatic
- White noise: TV
- Lots of creativity.

snippet is a granular resynthesizer (think of deLaMancha bent), highly cpu effectiveblortblort wrote:hey amiga909... where does one find the snippet2 of which you speak?...been searching for a bit in all the expected places (fxpansion [PC] link is dead, not on smartelectronix site, not on gersic...) me curious. had not heard of that one!
could not find it too
I am not really sure if bram bos did it. its surely from the smartelectronix heads, maybe it was dfx, prolly some collab. afaik it was on brams page when I downloaded it...
however, u can grab it here:

I believe snippet2 was an FXpansion creation which was intended to be part of the MindFX series. MindFX never surfaced unfortunately. Bear in mind that all this was way, way back.amiga909 wrote:snippet is a granular resynthesizer (think of deLaMancha bent), highly cpu effectiveblortblort wrote:hey amiga909... where does one find the snippet2 of which you speak?...been searching for a bit in all the expected places (fxpansion [PC] link is dead, not on smartelectronix site, not on gersic...) me curious. had not heard of that one!

Thanks, guys... actually, I found that I'd archived it to a cd (me am pak rat
)
Here is what I found on google to lead me to think that Angus (of fxpansion) may be the one responsible for this little goody

Or you could plop down about fourthousand dollars for a kyma, and you have one function that will make you aphex twin by just plugging in any drum loop, or if you actually are creative you'll make richard sound real lazy.
he goes to the well alot on kyma, even with that function, which you could use to write a whole idm breakbeat song, and NO one could tell the difference betweeen pain staking midi programming or just different loops in kyma.
OR you could do both for fun
I suppose the other thing left to do then would be use some of the new user filters (takes extra cards), to use some simple osc designs with the new COMPLEX filter programmed in kyma(smaltalk and math I barely understand, even after calc 3, linear algebra, and further endeavors, there is a guy there who built some filter designs that actually dare I say might, well not might, but are a little more analog sounding in response than even Urs's prize zebra filters(barely, still awsome filters urs, finally started using zebra a litttle more).
But, the things you can do in kyma in about 5 minutes, still can be done in fruity loops(IDM BREAKBEAT WISE), in a couple days of very dillegent drum programming with alot of automation, and something like zebra for the bass(seriously underused as a bass synth, zebra that is).
I'm gone for a while, seriously got to get a good look at the math behind some of the extremely powerfull filters that have near perfect(near perfect) reactions at super high resonance in the digital world, I know what they are doing, how it's being done, but to bring some of the math from the kyma world to the PC world, I'm going to have to drink buttloads of coffee, and really do a one to one transfer of math, into c++ programming to get ALMOST flawless filters here(there are some extra calls that can be constructed from main, in the pc world simply due to PC power of processors, but kyma's recurssive smalltalk is sort of like unwrapping a roll of tape, each level defines itself and is then called by the next layer, whereas in C++, I have all the different layers all over the place, I need to pull them together to have them recursive (horrible programming), really C++ can be just as recursive, and has to be, well not as recursive, ONE extra step for each simple definition in smalltalk, then a call, so I have to make a giant map on paper for me to see parts of it, then make it all one function, then make another map on another giant piece of paper, make it a function, eventually, maybe I'll have unravelled the math that is self defining each level in smalltalk, map it to enough pieces of paper, all over the place, label it all well enough, write it to my compiler, and finally port it to PC(F mac), I'm an ecologist, very ill, and so don't have much time, but I heard some of this, and thought it could be brought into the pc world, then, as for the random drumlooper, there's already stuff like that, BUT, in all honesty the settings are not correct in any program I have anyway, to get as good of a jungle breakbeat song, like hours seriously from one loop, just using one function in kyma, a timeline, and altering some of the function parameters as the time arrow in the timeline points forward.
Have to check reaktor(it can be done, but honestly it's not in ANY of the current ensembles), I HONESTLY think some very good scripting in kontakt could do a PERFECT job, seriously kontakt can be turned into easy peasy(lol not easy, but it can do it), it can do it all by itself, one instance of kontakt can DO EVERYTHING to make any type of idm breakbeat jungle song required.
Kontakt is a program, that NO one even mentioned, and that puppy with it's modulation, and SCRIPT functioning, can do it, one instance of kontakt can do ur whole jungle breakbeat song with lots of extra muscle to flex.
Alls I have to say is, I LOVE the time we live it, for ELECTRONIC musicians, we've never had it so good.
I don't use too many of the other programs mentioned, but I will take a look at all of them. Even if they don't do as neat or precise a job, they could be used to design samples to be further taken into reaktor, kontakt, or kyma, or wow, it'd be FRACKING(Battlestar Glactica), awsome if they could do it themselves, anyway, I'm off to make noise.

One of the best tools is definitely Heizenbox, the problem is, the website is not available anymore and if i remember right, there is only a Mac Version available which is not working on Intel Mac..

OHHH
There is also the free BreakBeat thingy now tooo,.....
It's the one that uses lots of Comb or flang filters ....
As a matter of fact I think it is called Break Beat,...
Code Audio made it,....but the programmer made it FREEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!
A little while ago.
Yup.,
It's code audio break beat....
with flanger and changing scences amounts, etc., different parameters, it really is AWSOME, even with a bunch of expensive gear, it doesn't matter, that thing is AWSOME,... woot woot!
It does alot of stuff that reaktor and Kyma do, only it does it in a different way, but man, it sounds GREAT!!!!
So, yah code audio break beat, for idm machine gun drums, and mangling a loop, plus all the other plugs in this thread, maybe some of BONES'S free Killerz, the newer ones, with the visual envelopes, that I think Dave Haupt designed, (first used in tim conrady's Galaxy),.....
Then for Bass, ZEBRA!!!!! seriously, I know it's expensive, but if you want a great digital filter that apprpoximates analog, which YOU need for DnB, then you have to get it!
I was trying to point out the most expensive then the free and cheapest, and for drums, seriously, I think this whole thread has a TON of great things for glitch drums, ....
But for the Bass Part, really zebra, has the best written filter for high cutoff, which ya kind of need to mix it up.
I think you could get by with also just free stuff, and using freee synth edit basses, but you will HAVE to go back and eq alot with the bass parts, if you can write some kind of automation in your track, with a great EQ plug in, FREE EQ stuff I don't know about, but if you have a free eq plug in, you can use it as an extremely attenuated filter instead of simple cut off and resonance.
So:
Break Beat from Code Audio
Deap Blue Glitch
Synth edit free synths, ran through a good free, equing prog, as an effect, use the free eq plug as a FILTER for your Bass, then you get really good respose at high resonance and can add bass to any synth with eq as an effect.
Finally when you go to master, or just plop it to wav, before you do, cut out the middle, if you have no melody of lyrics, with dnb you have the luxury of cutting out other parts and can leave the bass heavy.
For most pop, you have to do the reverse.
You can not boost bass too much or you'll get it "bleading" and distorted.
So, if that'ts the case, leave the bass at it's normal level and CUT the middle that lets high hats be heard and low kicks be KICKIING with no bleading, you just cut out the volume you don't use.
And use the FREEE progs!!!!
seriously, you can get DNB done with GREAT sound with free plugs, propper use of eq as an effect for bass, and plugs that do great stutter with either grain, ddly, or flanging to get a stutter efffect, then if you want to take it further and keep it free, like I said, you have to like 1/64 midi poke, or simply record at like 40 bpm and then pump it up to 160! super easy.
It can be done for free, and there are lots of easy tricks,....
EVERYONE HAVE A ROCKING FRIDAY NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOT

Really anything, i mean, besides all the sensible suggestions in this thread it's not a genre that's pretty much defined by some adventurous editing and sound design.
My tool of choice is a trusted wave editor, i used to muck around samples within cool edit ages ago and i still do that, extreme pitchshifting, crappy timestretching, crazy cutting and looping, this helps making glitchy stuff.
Then open up the sequencer and go at it, wildly.

Yep. Sequence, process, resequence, wave-edit, process, resequence... ad-infititum. Trackers are particularly adept at the resequencing part. People say that manual processes like this take ages but that's because it's a skill that requires practice like any other. The more you practice, the quicker you shall accomplish.grillo wrote:Really anything, i mean, besides all the sensible suggestions in this thread it's not a genre that's pretty much defined by some adventurous editing and sound design.

Another little mentioned tool around here is CDP. It's not real time, it's not the cheapest, it's a little dry/academic, a bit rough around the edges. But it's bloody fantastic nevertheless.
Lastly, I've got to say that I've no desire for a Kyma. I listened to that randominiloop mp3 and was left wondering why you need to spend thousands of pounds just to modulate the loop points and hit the reverse on a sampler every other beat. Seems like Reaktor or Max with an obscenely expensive front end from where I'm sitting. As for its supposedly amazing morphing, I'd say that morphing is a skill rather than a plug-in. Listen to Trevor Wishart's Vox 5 (incredible morphing accomplished via CDP circa 1985) if you don't believe me.

For proper glitch, record using broken plugs and/or cables. Record broken devices or faulty tapes/vinyl/cds.
For breakcore wackyness, I'd say a tracker is the way to go. Many breakcore guys seem to use them.
I've been playing around with Eric Lyon's LyonPotpourri externals for Pd (also available for Max/MSP) and they're fantastic and very suitable for this kind of stuff- from breaksy IDM to full-on Autechre madness.

The tendency for alot of young, budding artists is to seek help for sound resources, myself included early on in my music production forays. The problem with using VSTi presets is that someone else may have already utilized them or may use them at some point in a future mix. As a result, your distinction is somewhat tarnished. However, if you are simply inquiring about glitchy IDM type sounds in general for use in your music, I have found that Native Instruments Reaktor offers a wealth of these type of sounds. And because many of it's ensembles produce these sounds at random, then the chances of someone else creating a similar track to yours is greatly diminished.
