Is there any drum machine that comes close to
this one?

I mean for tweeking, and build up and sequencing....
That machinedrum is just FANTASTIC

Post

dont think..its quite the master in its class regarding sound flexibility and sequencing.

jomox drumsynths have an excellent sequencer and a sometimes warmer sound. not as flexible by far.

waldorf attack, as hardware rack, has a fantastic sound, no sequencer. (imho the first and only vsti plugin that became a dedicated hardware piece)

there ain't many substitutes.... your best bet is to use an old/cheap drum machine and use the midi out to control other sounds... but it won't be as nice as a MD with is really fantastic synth/sequencer integration

I personally got a Monomachine :) ...not cheap either

Thanx for the input...
How would compare something like KORG electribe ESX-1???
Or machines of that type?
Anything comparable?
TIA

esx-1: its a sampler, we're talking about a drumsynth here...

for me comparing a machinedrum with a sampler is heresy ;)
maybe get warm with software b4 spending loads of bucks??

cant think of any alternatives besides xbase and attack.
xbase: kewl seq, more 808/909ish sounds
attack: perfect for IDM

what I'd recommend (assumed: no software, only hardware magic)
- xbase 888/999, ~1500$
- attack rack, ~500$, + Behringer BCR2000 for full control, + hardware step sequencer (eg a cheap korg electribe): total cost ~900$

you're really better off just springing for the machinedrum or using software, methinks.

I never had a MACHINEDRUM but I did own a MONOMACHINE and I never really got the hang of it. Loved the sound though but now I can do so much more with a combination of Battery, MACHINEDRUM samples and Live. To be fair I use Jamstix, Stylus RMX and a few others too.

another option would be to wait for linndrum2

$1400 ? I think I'd get the elektron....but then I don't know the linn drumII...
Anyway, are there machines I suppose you call them "grooveboxes" that offer
manipulation of sound, sequencing, sounds, etc??? (I don't want to be blasphemous)
I'd like to have a hardware piece, I can plug in headphones and be AWAY from the PC, because in the summer it gets really hot in the attic.
I live in a really small place... :(
Thanx

I've seen the emx come up as a comparison but apparently the monomachine is a lot better, whatever that means.I have an emx and i love it,put some decent tubes in it recently snd it sounds much better than the stock tubes it comes with, they don't suit the mx imo. There's lot of demos on youtube :)

A few other people have done it.There's a thread on it here:

http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... 945#235945

reddone kicked it all off and now everyone's doing it!There's lots of info in the thread about different tubes and where to get them from so it's worth reading. :)

The improvement on mine was dramatic,it sounds like a different instrument.I was planning to sell mine until i upgraded.I don't know why korg put those tubes in there on a unit that cost £500+ when they came out.I think you can get them now for abt £389 new.I got mine used on ebay though they may not turn up as often these days!

Have a read through the thread. The guys on there are know a lot about the tribes so ask them if you've got any questions and they'll help you out.

Oh yeah there a few people have had issues with the balance been off with new tubes.I did but i swapped them and it was fine. It's a good idea to get matched ones and the ones i got were the Groove Tubes ECC-83s from.Different tubes give different overall tone depending on the design but the GTs i think would be a good one to start with and i'd recommend doing it straight away as it will affect your overall impression of the emx.

Thanx for that and the link to Korg forum, very helpful, when you're getting into something new...
I think I want to go with the ESX1 for the sampling ability.
I have been poring over the 2 manuals to compare the 2...EMX and ESX... not easy :?
Cheers

Your welcome :)

I went for the MX for the sound engine, otherwise i probably would have got the SX but i figured i'd use live for working with samples. As you want something to use away from the computer maybe the SX is better for you as you'll be able to load your samples and take them with you and it is more flexible than the MX your not limited to the onboard sounds.I have no experience of the SX though so can't tell you how good it is.

If you want my advice take your time and do your research.I found youtube really useful,in fact that's where i saw the MX.
