Tascam apparently is about the only maker of a portable device (CD or more recently mp3 player) that can slow down the track a selectable amount and still maintain the original pitch and then set up loop points on a given track to practice along.

I just sent away for one in the hopes that this will aid my practice sessions. I have a collection of Hal Leonard Style books that have snippet to full example tracks on CD and in staff notation. I'm thinking half speed I may be able to finally develop the left/right coordination and reading skills. If nothing else should be able to put together the sheet music with how it's supposed to sound.

Anybody have any experience with this device? I guess it's usually used for picking up a phrase/riff/piece by ear from the original recording, so combined with music book with CD should really give a leg up.

There are plenty of software equivalents That can handle separate pitch and tempo adjustment from audio.

Most educational publishers are opting for midi.

Some software vendors like PGmusic's powertracks
will analyze audio and spit out midi.
