what is emotionally in tense music anyway? Shostakovich's 5th? I would also have to go with Bach's Organ werks.

Nirvana's whole "Unplugged" show, Kurt was just singing like he already knew he was dead. Specifically the Meat Puppets and Leadbelly covers... just damn.
A bunch of Alice in Chains songs too. Frogs.
Cowboy Junkies cover of "Sweet Jane" but for personal reasons.
People talk to me about Tool (probably my favorite band) being very emotionaly intense but I don't hear it... their stuff seems too left brain to be emotionally resonant for me, intellectually resonant, yes but I'm always too floored by the musical details to focus on anything else.

if we're getting into classical I'd also recommend Mahler's "Songs on the death of children", R Strauss's "4 last Songs", Ravel's "Chanson Madecasse", Debussey's "Trois Chanson de Bilitis", Wagner's "Isolde's leibestodt" and Tippet's "A Child of our Time" - all hugely emotive and powerful pieces that move me profoundly.

I love the cover of "The man who sold the world" on that.justin3am wrote:Nirvana's whole "Unplugged" show, Kurt was just singing like he already knew he was dead. Specifically the Meat Puppets and Leadbelly covers... just damn.

My fave Cowboy Junkies track is "Witches" - simply beautiful
I think Schism by Tool is pretty intense emotionally as well as musically (time signatures madness) - esp in conjunction with the awesome video and its choreography
the stuff some of them did as "A Perfect Circle" is more emitionally charged as well - great music.

In another thread, I joked about the lyrics to 'I am, I said' which always struck me as odd, but I'll admit that ND has emotional cred.Chuck E. Jesus wrote:well, i know better than mentioning Neil Diamond around here anymore
Back to the topic at hand: When I was a kid, Terry Jacks singing 'Seasons in the Sun' made me cry, but that was the purpose of that very very sad song.
Today, I'll give a nod to Genesis 'Musical Box' and 'Supper's Ready' for emotional impact.

really obvious mentioning Bob Mould again in a thread like this but the guy's built a career on 'emotionally intense' so...
'Sacrifice' from 'Black Sheets of Rain' - The final verses just sounds like someone having a breakdown right there in the studio... Same with Husker Dus 'Too Far Down', really sounds like he's at the end of his tether.
American Music Club - 'Kathleen'
Throwing Muses - 'Hate My Way'
Red House Painters - 'Katy Song' or 'Evil'
Low - 'Murderer'
