RE Creative .. history of douchebaggery.

I'm afraid its a mixed bag (if you'll excuse the pun). On one hand they have acted for years like the (E)SQ series was lost in the noise to them. They had long sent out emails after the merger saying they would in no way support or concern themselves with anything that old.

On the other hand, they have threatened that guy who was making his own Vista drivers for their newer soundcards, a very shameful knee-jerk reaction IMO. It has caused them to lose a lot of face in the power-user community.

So its anyone's guess. My sense is they are more concerned with their current properties and have no interest in things from back then, unless someone stands to make big money, which, lets face it, you cannot do with a boutique VST.

Well then - he's in the clear! If people aren't losing their minds and grabbing up the hardware versions of old Ensoniq's (and their not - I'm getting a mint ESQ-1 today for 150 - and that's a bit pricey by some standards, SQ80's top out around 250, Mirage's can be had for as low as...2.25 US!), it's a safe bet that a software version won't fair much better.

I think it'll be great for Sigi as an individual, he may pay his rent off of it for a few months if he's lucky, but it won't be worth the trouble for Creative.

So let's stop worrying about it and continue LUSTING after it.

Sigikull, I want to take a moment to say 'Thank You' for introducing me to this fantastic instrument. It's the perfect synth for me: grungey, digital, analog and cheap. The idea that I can feasibly own the entire Ensoniq 'Q line for less that one would pay for a MiniMoog tickles me to no end.

Another factor: Since many of us own Hardware SQ80s, ESQ1s and ESQ^Ms, it is reasonable that we are allowed to use our wave ROM "license" as we see fit for personal use.

This is similar to the MAME license or a Nintendo emulator, where you are allowed to play the ROMS on your PC as long as you own the cartridges.

If pressured, Siegfried could offer a sound-alike ROM free for public use, a licensed ROM for anyone who can afford to pay tribute to Creative Labs, and a ROM dump which would be fair use for anyone who already owned the hardware Ensoniq.

It's not an elegant solution, but it does offer many contingencies, and will keep the development from getting bogged down in a legal morass. But let me restate my contention that I believe the SQ8X as it stands is on legal firm-footing based on 10 years of precedent in the Ensoniq community and an additional 10 years of tacit approval (or at least tolerance) from the Creative Labs merger.

of course, I'm not a lawyer. A good test-case would be to see if Arturia pays some kind of fee to the patent-holders of the Prophet V for use of the Prophet VS wave ROMS. I doubt Dave Smith sees a penny for the ROMs, but he says he likes Arturia's version of the software Prophet.

Has anyone succeeded in getting all the presets available? I tried those links on Sigi's site but came up with nothing. I wish someone would corral them up and post them in a central location.

the volume is very soft.. it was on another version too if i remember corectly? a bit too soft i think
