Is there a mp3 direct mastering plugin out there?
What i mean is a master plugin that converts to mp3 and back again so one can mix and master directly in mp3. same with mp4 etc.

convert to mp3 and back again is a VERY bad idea.

I think I know what he's getting at but it isn't really possible because you'll never get real time interactive feedback from the mp3. You have to just wait until it encodes and see what result you got from your tweaks. What I think you want is something that instantly converts your master audio to mp3 so you can listen to that directly and there is no encoding process that fast, AFAIK.

I agree its a pain to master to mp3 and I wonder how many mastering engineers actually do this. It seems, more and more, like a necessary evil. The compression certainly changes not only the timbre but also the effect of the mix. It's worse in some cases than in others.

MP3 is only supposed to be for the end listener. MP3 is not the end all be all audio solution.

No, high quality MP3's are great for someone who is buying music and listening to it in it's final form. MP3's are not for anyone that will need to re-encode the audio again. In my opinion DAWs should not even have an 'export to MP3' option available. I don't use it, I don't think anyone should. It's kinda sad that even people who are supposed to be professional in this industry send MP3's around... I get so many acapellas in MP3 from some big RECORD LABELS expecting me to use them for their remixes!

Is the current LAME encoder not good? I use that in Tracktion 2 with VBR on highest setting. What is something better?
