Ok lets explain ... it ... again... sl..ow...ly....

Since most music is evetually encoded in mp3 I would like to have a reference mix to make sure the master sounds good after the encoding. (dude - wake up - if your not encoded into mp3 - no one is listening to your music. [Ok your girlfriend and a couple of other dudes on the internet])

Never did I say that i would leave the plugin activated in the final master. Its an A-B thing.

Please no posts on "mp3 sounds terrible I am a sound connoisseur and music arteest".

Just mix n master, and use the best encoder. Its not going to make much a diff. you just deal with it. all mp3s suck. everybody deals, or uses flac. :hihi:

Actually most people either don't know what the heck FLAC is or don't care for the file size, they find it as pointless as WAV files. It's only people that don't use MP3's that think MP3's suck. I must have missed those FLAC playing Ipods.....

I don't like mp3's but I use them for things like MySpace.

mp3 sounds ok when at least encoded at 192,
higher than 256 it gets really good.

But the main problems come from the codec used.
Most CUT ALL above 16000hz !!!

OGG Vorbis doesnt.
Xing mp3 codec doesnt.

You want A/B, use an spectrum-analyzer.
GET SHOCKED !

My current mp3 encoding preference is:
Lame 3.97:
-B 320 -k -h -V 0 --vbr-new

I use this for sound demos compression (5.7:1)

This way mp3 does sound a bit 'crispier' than WAVs, but I do not find this coloration overly excessive: this 'crispness' is mainly a result of noise being added by the codec. Well, for me it sounds like an artistical coloration anyway. :)

WAVs are better anytime, because they are originals.

On the topic, when using such 'hi quality' mp3 encoding, there is no real need in any 'pre-emphasis'. For much lower bit rates pre-emphasis may be necessary, but let's face it - you can't do anything substantial that will make things sound 'better'. You can basically only change broadband EQ shape so that mp3 codec favors some frequency ranges at the expense of other frequency ranges. On the other hand, adjusting EQ shape of a 'final' musical product may be even worse than 'mp3 swooshing' you'd like to hide.

Well put Aleksey !

Can someone explain what these indications mean: -B 320 -k -h -V 0 --vbr-new ?

I get the vbr as variable bit rate. When I use LAME 3.97 in Tracktion 2 it just gives me options for quality settings from 1-10 when using vbr. I use 10 and the file sizes are quite reasonable but encoding is slow.

Max VBR rate is 320 kbit/s (-B 320), no polyphase low-pass filter (-k), high quality setting (-h), highest VBR quality (-V 0), "new" VBR algorithm (--vbr-new). Joint-stereo encoding is assumed.

I'm glad you said this because I have always been shocked at the resulting FLAC file size.

MP3's do have a place in the audio world and I certainly wouldn't say any compression type "sucks" because they each have their own use. They are tools. And you're absolutely right; the iPod listening public has said "This sounds good enough for me to buy".

Obviously, MP3 has no place in a mastering form but for end user delivery, it's an option.

I would say music has been hurt more by the loudness wars than any compression algo.

I am surprised; however, that OV hasn't become more popular . . .
I still think, your punctuation sucks, and your spelling isn't cool! So there...

No need to be surprised. MP3 pays to certain parties (even if only its license owners) who then promote it on all channels possible. Free software will always lose this war, because nobody is really interested in its promotion. Promotion is everything in the business areas with a fast-growing potential.

Great, thanks. :)

Good God . . . I suppose I should have figured something like that was happening.

To you 'all mp3s suck' folks: I'd bet the majority of you couldn't tell the difference between a V0 mp3 and a FLAC in a double blind test.
