Great synth ..... but I still find myself wanting a Little Phatty :) Someone please talk me out of it! Why should I NOT buy a Moog Little Phatty (apart from the fact that I can't afford one right now!)

Sorry, I can't think of a single reason why you shouldn't buy one. Sadly, I have a good reason for ME not to buy one—a Little Phatty has very low Wife Acceptance Factor at the moment.

Funny, how come wives never care about the Husband Acceptance Factor? Is this equality? To the barricades!

Oh, they do care. Much more than we do.

Why do you think hell breaks up when you don't notice her new haircut or something?

I think the difference is that they expect us to like everything they do/buy, whereas we expect them not to.

I have owned a lot of Moog synths with that special "Moog Sound". The Little Phatty was not one of them. :?
Yeah, but have you owned a Moog Guitar? :P
No.... do you reckon it will have those high-falutin' plastic jacks that so much of the other Moog stuff has these days?
I kind of associate "highfalutin" with Spectrasonics rather than Moog. But, hey, a fancy-shmancy plastic jack is a fancy-shmancy plastic jack.

i want one of these tooo! the only hardware synth i'm rocking right now is my novation x-station but it's mostly a controller (i have v-station in my computer anyway). the little phatty is the only hardware synth i really want. i don't know why but it reminds me of clockwork orange.

Have you actually played a Little Phatty? Its really very limited. I tried one at Guitar Center, and had fully explored the boundaries of its sonic capabilities in about 20 minutes. That's fine, as long as you love the limited palette it provides, but I really didn't feel it justified the price tag. I'd much rather save up for a Voyager.

How's that working out for you? It looked nice from the review in FM a few months back. Great price too.
It's good but I had a few problems. Playing it from my MIDI keyboard (Akai MPK49) only works via routing in a sequencer because the MPK49's MIDI-out port does not send MIDI out directly when hooked up via USB! My Axiom did this okay & it seemed to work better but I changed it because it was only 2 octave. When I play fast the notes seem to miss & skip. It sounds a right mess! I think I could sort this by using program change messages to put the Neptune 2 into it's various modes. But I don't seem to be able to get this to work! Sound wise though it's as fat as you like.

Really? So you don't rate it much at all then? What do you say to deastman's comment about it being very limited? To me it seems like a typical analogue monosynth, which is what I wanted.

Funny you should say that. Whilst I was reading the responses to this post last night me wife came in, saw what I had posted & explained, "Because your wife says NO", whilst shaking her finger at me in a comic fashion!

BTW, Someone on e-bay has just sold 2 Little Phatty's for £450 a piece! That's got to be a dodgy seller surely? These things are about £800 new aren't they? (3rd & 4th items down on this list)

That would be funnier if the synth was called Skinny Fatty. :D

The Little Phatty 2 was just released and the second hand price of the original Little Phatty has fallen as a result. Some people on one of the other forums were complaining because if they had sold there little Phattys a few weeks sooner they'd have got an extra hundred bucks or so.

It really didn't do much for me. It sounded pretty generic, lacking that special sound that says "Moog". Not that it sounded bad, it just didn't sound like a thousand dollar+ monosynth. And it is indeed very limited. There is no dedicated noise generator, for one. Moog added a noise waveform to the LFO after the fact, but that isn't remotely the same (it's not a bad addition though). Problem is, you have to go menu-diving to get to even that. The Little Phatty is fine if you want to make simple basses and leads and very simple fx sounds. It was wholly uninspiring to me. I tried very hard to love it, but it was eventually shipped back to Moog. It wasn't that it was bad, but it just wasn't anything special to my ears.

In it's favor: it is real analog, so it sounds like it (though, in my opinion, not particularly great analog), and the knobs are smooth and responsive, exhibiting none of the coarseness common to programmable analogs.

Everybody responds differently to a synth, and a lot of people love the thing. Get one on loan or from a place with a return policy if you can and live with it for a few days. It might be exactly right for you.

LOL! A good friend of mine (also a guitar player) got married in the second last year of uni, when I saw him the next year he said "Vinay - make sure you buy all your musical equipment BEFORE you get married!"

How true it seems! Just got some monitors and software left! hehehe

Thanks for the reply, Scott. Food for thought given how much they cost. Maybe I would be better going for something like a second hand Roland SH-09 & also buying a Kenton MDI > CV converter.

BTW, have you used the Spectral Audio Neptune 2 yourself? If so what did you think of it? I found that I enjoyed working with my mates SH-09 more than my Neptune 2. I went for the Neptune 2 because it was well priced & a new synth. I felt more comfortable buying something new as opposed to something 20 odd years old! If there were any problems with it I wouldn't be on my own trying to get it sorted. This was also part of the appeal of the Little Phatty but the high price put me off in the end. There were much cheaper new analogue synths around like the Neptune 2, Semblance & one or two others people on this forum mentioned.

I have no experience with the Neptune, I'm afraid. I loved both of my old SH-09 synths (long gone alas. One given to a friend, the other gave up the ghost). Keeping up a good vintage synth is a drag, and an expensive one at that. It is one consideration that makes buying new a good option. These vintage things are getting really, really old. My Minimoog is as close to new as it can be, but it cost me more than buying a Little Phatty would to get it that way. Some things just aren't worth fixing. I have a battered CS-15 that has a screwy keyboard. Don't know if I will ever sink any money into fixing that one.

A new Little Phatty or some other modern analog isn't going to give you such troubles.

Precisely. And for me that makes them much more attractive. The old analogue stuff obviously has huge appeal but I'd be gutted if I spent hundreds of pounds on something 20 years old & something went wrong with it. I'd rather spend my money on something that was new, more reliable & had a warranty! :) I'd also like a little analogue monosynth that had a keyboard so you could just use it on it's own. The Little Phatty is only thing like that around these days unfortunately. A Prophet 08 would be nice but it's way to expensive. I'll do the lottery tonight. If I win I'll buy one ;)
