Knobs, sliders, whatever...

Ok the synth is from the 80s and sound like that... but must the gui also be user-unfriendly 80s-style?

Tweaking is really boring...

Does anyone remember which page of this monster thread the presets link was on?

Yes, it's improved but still not "up-2-date".

I like this synth very much, but it is difficult to work with.

That's not a function of the GUI; it's down to the flexible modulator architecture of the SQ-80. There are some standard conventions between presets however. i.e Env4 is hard assigned to the DCA4 (Main Amp section), hence you should always look there first when seeking to edit the overall Attack, Sustain, Release. Note: Each Oscillator has it's own DCA which can have an envelope assigned as well.

All this is made much more apparent with the latest release which displays the overall architecture on the GUI. Study that. This addition really helps define how it all fits together, as well as giving instant access to each section with the click of a button

The other gotcha is the envelopes themselves, which are a bit more complicated than a simple ADSR. Especially when you note:
1. The time settings are Time, not Rate.
2. The Level settings can have negative values.
3. T4 can feature a second release setting, 00R-63R,
4. An Envelope's overall levels can be reduced (linear or exponential response) by reduced velocity (LV).
5. An Envelope's attack time (T1) can be reduced with increased velocity (T1V).
6. An Envelope's Decay times (T2, T3) can reduced on higher keys = keyboard scaling (TK).

I suspect a read of the manual (Section 3) could clear up a lot for you.

I like the look and (as a result) the feel of this synth... if anything I hope the GUI is NOT changed dramatically... it would change how I approach it and (again as a result) what type of sounds I create in it.

I like this synth very much, but it is difficult to work with.

Click the INFO name on top of SQ8L and choose "modulation usage", a new window will open and show all the routing inside your patch.
This make it very easy to see where your envelopes and lfo's and what ever is routed.

Also the envelopes should be graphically...

To me it's perfect now. The gui respects the synth's philosophy, and I have fun working with something different (including gui).

I don't think the average user is prepared for the degree of modulation routings this synth offers. When a previous post mentioned current flat synths like oatmeal or the free CM magazine ones (which are fine VST's), I realized just how different SQ8L is to the standard VST additive analog. It has more in common with the PATCHABLE MODULAR SYNTHS in that respect. Almost anything can modulate anything else. I'll see if I can't bang out a tutorial that covers the GUI and the modulation options.
