How can I accomplish vocals similar to the one Ministry uses?

Post

Distort the vox ......... really rough it up

Then whack it through a hardware compressor and compress it so F***in hard that the unit starts oozing black slime and the meters smash out of their glass cages.

(of course i jest... a soft compressor will do :D )

Really .... with Ministry style vox .... anything goes, and i mean ANYTHING.

When you distort vocals you have to put something after the distortion to
"control" the distortion - see my thread on controlling dist

For vocals i would use - any distortion followed by your choice of filter , phaser chorus flanger and compression

Bit chrushers are also fun

- to be honest distorted vocals are a bit of a cliche my friend------ but have fun 8)

distortion-> compressor-> eq-> fast chorus with shallow depth-> reverb-> delay

I forgot to mention noisegate - its good to have a gate on a distorted mic cause its gonna make the room noise real loud

No you don't. If you use the right distortion you will get the sound you need. Your other thread is about a specific distortion that you like but I would suggest that finding one that works is more important.
There are a couple of things that you can do to get that sound. One is distortion, the other is a slow, deep chorus that gives a sound like you have phlegm stuck in the back of your throat. Combine these and scream your lungs out - a lot of it is in the performance.
Oh, and you will never need compression because distortion is extreme compression/clipping, so ignore the idiot who suggested that.

to be honest having vocals at all is a cliche :hihi:

.....and +1 to BONES...his post is spot on, and compression is certainly not needed after the distortion

You probably wont want compression if you are after just a plain ol "distorted" sound .......

But its a pretty well known fact that ministry, in their earlier years, based ALOT of their sound, vocal and otherwise, upon extreme analog compression techniques .......

.... and this is precisely what the OP asked for?

As is not having vocals. Its all been done to death, there is no point in kidding yourself that you are doing anything even remotely original. It all comes down to what you like and what you want to do.

Ministry, in their earlier years, sounded like a bad cross between Prince and Thomas Dolby, which has nothing to do with the OP's question, so what's your point?

I think Melkor and BONES live in the same city, so can I suggest:

Everything has pretty much been done before...music has been been pushed to its limits.

Might as well give up then.

Not a joke, hence the lack of emoticons.

And why is that? Who the f**k said anything about giving up? If want to give up music or whatever, that's on you...the rest of us will continuing doing what we do.

And that's not a joke either, hence no emoticons.

People have been saying the 'music has been pushed to it's limits' thing my whole life.

Maybe it has. But that saying is also a common once people hit that age where they're absolutely certain nothing new is good. (guilty, at times myself.) Alot of people just stop listening to anything new, and just hover around the stuff that they listened to in their teens and early twenties. My dad said everything after the 60s sucked, and now my friends are saying everything after the 80s sucked, and I'm starting to hear the same thing from people who grew up on 90s stuff.

This is OT, but maybe music has been played out, but it's always new to *someone*. All those kids listening to Knights of Cydonia, thinking its so new , while us old fogies are yelling 'it's been done by queen!'

just make music, and stop fretting, I say.

Distort those f**king vocals.
