Why? Is originality that important? Whilst I would hate to be thought of as a clone of this or that artist, I think most genres have plenty of space to fill in between the sound of established artists. I've never really understood this desire people seem to have to be totally original, it just isn't possible any more, unless you want to make horrible music. We take a bit from here and a bit from there and hopefully combine them in a way that sounds like us. People try to be critical of us by saying we sound like bands from the 90's but we actually see that as a compliment because that is exactly the sound we are after.

Ministry, in their earlier years, sounded like a bad cross between Prince and Thomas Dolby, which has nothing to do with the OP's question, so what's your point?

My point is that they used extreme analog compression techniques to achieve this sound ...... and continued to do so right up until their last album .... on vocals and otherwise.

Actually, if some of you guys would do a little research, you'd see that Ministry is notorious for using/abusing the hell out of his Eventides for vocal effects... several roadies have reported seeing up to 3 all simultaneously in use at Ministry concerts. Al makes it no secret... there is even a write up/interview with Al on the Eventide website: http://www.eventide.com/News/User%20Pro ... istry.aspx

Most of the algorithms he uses are doing some massive pitch shifting in both directions. The folks in this thread recommending using chorus effects are way more on target than those saying to just drown your vox in distortion and compression... all that will do is make your voice sound like shit, or like nearly every other *industrial* band out there. Apply too much distortion and compression and all you have is a mess with no dynamics... this is not what you hear when you listen to Ministry. Most of his vocals are still audible and intelligible and contain lots of dynamics, even though they are at times drowned out by the chaos of the music. This is because he uses the distortion/compression sparingly. Only on the "backup vocals" do you hear lots of distortion... take the track "Scarecrow" as an example.

Being how expensive Eventides are, I doubt this the solution you were looking for. I would suggest experimenting with whatever Pitchshifting/Chorus effects that are within your budget (dont be afraid to chain them), followed by a *hint* of saturation if desired... then followed by good EQ and lots of delay. Uncle Al loves his vocal delay =)
