I'm not listening to it but memory is telling me (it sometimes lies) that it's a tape echo with feedback, so it gets progressively more distorted.
But it could be I'm thinking of the wrong part of the song. As I said, I've got a mind like a steel... erm... sieve.
[edit] Never mind, ignore the above -- I was thinking of Dogs, "dragged down by the stone stone stone stone stone." Beg pardon. I think you've got it right, crossfading the vocal with a razzy, brassy synth. Isn't there a filter sweep in there too?

I always thought they just sampled the voice and just gradually changed it with a synth (starting dry then dialing more and more). Also remember this was done in the 70s so tech was not what it is today.

I hear a lot of gentle reversed reverb, plus some delay, and a morphing into a synth patch (probably done by cross-fading)
