Being an utterly self-obsessed twat who does not consider for one moment that humanity would find my emotional shopping list anything less than utterly fascinating.
And being the child of god. As if nobody else is. I still haven't figured out how being hammered to a plank - apparently on the whim of my undefined but infinitely merciful absentee/omnipresent pater - constitutes forgiveness for sins, or even what that is supposed to mean. It has helped me write some quality middle-eights though.

I agree with jplanet- silence.
Second to that, taking a shower. When I'm standing in the shower something musical almost always pops into my head.
If you find me recording at home with only one leg shaved and shampoo dried to a crust on my head, you'll know where I got my inspiration that day.

I just go. I have rhythm that won't let me go, and I work with it. I like silence; I'm not inspired by something someone else is doing/have done, so much anymore, *influences*, may be I'm passing full with that; need to empty out from, at this point. Or, if surrounded by noise, my mind likes to shape it into something meaningful, which I think is what the human mind likes to do, period.
As far as externals, I get a riff with words sometimes, which is its own thing, a song, and that can be inspired by emotion. That's kinda sorta extramusical inspiration though, is my thought.

honestly learning theory and understanding what I have learned have been the most inspiring perks as of late.
secondary dominants, borrowed chords, key modulations, modes.... my brain hurts from all the possibilities. I play the piano everyday exploring these things and stuff just starts to happen so I roll with it.
