There was a kind of gretest hits released in the late 80s called 'All Over The World', which had the band picture apparently playing live (well, all on scaffold looking mid song and surrounded by dry ice). However, there were no strings, just Jeff on guitar, Kelly on Bass, and everyone else playing DX7s...
I think the album came out around '89.

When I was working for Thames Water a number of years back, one of the managers used to dep for Kelly when he couldn't make some of the gigs! This was Face the Music/New World Record time. For the life of me I can't remember his name. Quite a shy, quietly spoken bloke, but fantastic bassist.

That comfirms my impression. I had read that Yamaha stuff (DX7, CS-80) figured prominently in a lot of their work, and the softsynth versions do seem to have the qualities I hear in their albums. Of course, they have all the talent to use the instruments in ways many of us only dream of. :)

WTF is that synth at the beginning of Starlight? I love that sound!

I don't know anything about the synths they used, but Secret Messages was probably the first album on cassette I bought when aged about 15, and remember it as excellent music, listening to it over and over till the tape bust. Seems like that wonder style of music has all but vanished.

Not that it's exactly sitting down and having dinner but my friend Tito has pictures of himself with various musicians on his MySpace page and one of the coolest ones is of him with Jeff, somewhere in Vegas. The only thing cooler than that picture is the one next to it: Ron and Russell Mael!

Bluebird, Secret Messages and the entire TIME album have to be my all-time favorite songs EVER produced!!!!

Even though it is not the point of the thread I would join a tribute to ELO anytime. In addition I would indeed like to know by which production means they achieved that "roomy" or "hall" sound to their music for which they became famous: By using lots of reverb?

Interesting. I thought I'd get some anti-ELO replies, but instead have discovered enthusiastic fans here. Anyone recommend a DVD of them in concert?

I think someone would have to be daft not to recognize Lynne's genius.

Even his solo album "Armchair Theater" was absolutely magnificent.

I am pretty sure they either recorded in very large halls or used old fashioned tape tricks to achieve the reverb - I believe they predate effects boxes until their late 1980's album (remember "Calling America").

In the song, "The Rain Is Falling," they recorded a really fantastic grand piano that kicks in well into the song and the sound is downright spacious - it had to be recorded in a very large recording studio with lots of actual reflections to bounce off of.

Please correct me if i'm wrong - this is all supposition and best guess from me.

I'm not sure which side it's on, but this custom Mellotron contains the guts of the ELO Mellotron. The other side contains Felix Pappalardi's:

I still think their first album was their best.
