Wow, I have a really meager setup compared to a lot of people. I mean, I have a few nice or interesting pieces, but a lot of people here have such a better setup.

On the other hand, it's not what you have, it's how you use it. If I had more room I would spend way more of my income on gear and not cheap beer. Ok, well, I would spend more on gear and cheap beer and I guess less on food. I have a desk job anyways. I don't need to eat that much to maintain my weight...

My wife finds my frustration hilarious. :bang:
Haha. I usually have KVR open on my laptop when I'm writing stuff too. Kind of a nice distraction to keep me on my toes. I used to always have a TV on in the background back in my visual art days too.

Oh, the TV is on too... my place is over stimulation central! My wife is playing World of Warcraft, the TV's on, and I'm not writing music... I'm attempting to learn to play guitar. I have a bunch of lessons minimized on the laptop. I wonder why I'm not getting anywhere. Hmm...

Those things in the background need to be there to keep you distracted enough to where you don't drop into your left brain. Some of my best stuff, musically and visually, has been done with a thousand things going on in the background.

Oddly enough, it's the focus through all of the noise that does it. You have to find that "Zen" mentality about it but it works. I guess it's the Buddhist idea of detachment from the material. Basically it's an exercise in meditation. I've trained myself my entire life to reach that state and it's something that has proven absolutely invaluable. It makes playing shows a lot easier though. I don't see or hear the crowd. I know they're there, and I can hear them and guage their reactions, but I've never had stage fright. Ever.

Wow. You guys have reminded me of the days of my high school band, where we always had Willy Wonka and The Cholocate Factory playing during practice. I need to start that again. I do tend to a little left brained when i sink too deeply into things.

I'm super ADD most of the time so I need a million things going on at once to focus. It's like there is a certain point where it just becomes a background wash as opposed to individual distractions. I find that it is kind of meditative in a way, making it easier to get in the moment rather than trying to think about the whole process at once. :)

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.
