Having a stereo system and actually having a stereo source are two different things though. Not all radio stations broadcast in ACTUAL stereo. Now, mainstream stations, yes. The radio network I work at(with hundreds of affiliate stations we feed audio to), yes. But some stations do still use mono.

However, it's NOT the majority. And MOST music stations are in stereo. Much of the mono market is talk radio, with some mono AM music stations.

Also, as you say, with the digital television switch, stereo will be standard. My wife and I have DirecTV with a surround system. And the standard is indeed stereo OR BETTER. Many movies are even broadcast in surround on even the basic cable channels.

Actually there's another way to interpret mono compatibility: sometimes you want a piano as a point source in a mix, meaning you want it ALL to emanate from one point. If you do that, you need to collapse the stereo image to a mono mix, and if the instrument doesn't collapse well to mono, it's not going to sound right.

That to me is a much greater concern. So far, I haven't needed to do this, but I'll take a closer look at that next time I'm working with Truepianos.

Also: When playing live, a stereo signal in the PA system can give the poor sound guy all kinds of headaches, depending on venue and context...

Roel de Witt wrote: TruePianos is not a building block for designing your own piano. There is a certain other decent virtual piano instruments that allows you to do that already. The more elements that are taken out of the main chain the bigger the risk that the sound becomes (slightly) synthesized which is not somewhere we want to go for v2.0.

Roel - first, i own truepianos and really really like it.

Second - I appreciate your passion and focus. Build it as you see fit. I prefer products focused on doing something very well, rather than products trying to do everything.
