I've been trying to figure out how to make pads for ages. I cannot come close, even with hours of tweaking. I would love to know how to make pads like the freemasons have in their songs.

+1. Pads are a mistery for me. I've searched KVR and Google but couldn't find a good tutorial. :(

okay guys, here is my 2 c:

forget the usual synth shit.... grab the most bizarre sample apply some distortion and fitler export, reload in sample and play it at c1 or lower, loop the best parts....

then modulate the loop start point to make it alive.

cheers

i think what is meant is to
1) distort the sample
2) filter and further mangle it
3) export (bounce) the sample and reload it into a sampler
4) tweak it further

hope that helps

I wouldn't call this a pad sound, more a lead.
Anyway, you need a synth with a very dirty filter sound (like a Korg MS-20) and something to distort the signal further, an overdrive pedal might do the trick.

i mean one of the main tricks of the progessive sounds is the modulated delay effect.
make a pad with a slow opening filter or moving banpass, phaser or flanger effect. then insert a delay effect (trioles or every thing else). make a automation of the delaysend or input so that it starts to recieve when the padsounds goes wide open . at this moment the padsoundnote reaches the fast sustain and you hear the delay.

the other way is a sound with large hallamount (long tail). record this , reverse the sample and build a similar delayautomation or automate a hall.

One simple thing I found out works good on dark pads is to load up a sample into absynth granular engine and slow down the sample. Also play with the other parameters of the granular engine.

These are interesting tips. Thanks for share!

However:

Take a "sample" and do this and that. But what kind of sample? A string, another pad, a long saw-wave sample, a snare? (ok, the snare was a joke, :D)

I'm trying to play various waveforms taken from weird sounds in loop mode at same time, and play around with some filter plugins and got interesting results. However, it needs some FX and I think I'm almost there.

lol, you can easily make good pads out of snares, really.

just find a sound with an interesting character.
