Hi, I have just purchased a new EZ-EG. I currently have reason 3.0 installed on my computer. I run windows XP, and I have no idea how to get this thing working. Is there anyone that can please give me a step by step instruction on how to get it going (i.e. which drivers to install, what other software I may need, do I need to set reason to a certain setting? ect.) I would greatly appreciate it, Thank you!

Post

I don't use Reason, but here's some info

As far as drivers, well there's no driver, but you'll need a midi interface that connects to your computer. Seeing as how you have Reason, maybe you have one? At any rate that will have a driver. You also need an audio driver, as built in audio has latency, or you could use free asio4all. Just throwing it out there.

Using the midi output directly from the guitar kind of sucks. Two things, the strings all use a seperate midi channel and a fretted note but not plucking the string with the right hand, creates low velocity notes which totally screws up your playing. So you need to get rid of low velocity notes altogether and depending on your software, might want to route all strings down to a single channel.

I'd try out one of the scripts made for it. I think it was Markelford that made one, whoever has the tencrazy in his sig. Look back a page. I don't think Reason accepts vst plugins, but there's various stuff like ndcmidi that can filter out low velocity notes, so you only hear what you pluck/pick.

I have installed the driver for the UX16, I have downloaded MIDI-OX and Midi yoke, the MIDI OX recognizes the midi yoke and my reason 3.0 recognizes the yoke as well. but when my EZ-EG is plugged in, I still do not get any midi signal in Reason. Forgive me I am clueless with any of this stuff except reason. can someone please break the process down into simple terms so I can understand it. Thank you!

Post

Well you don't need midiox at all, that's just helpful to examine midi data.

Midiyoke is to re-route midi data. Your original signal is the yamaha ux16, you could select that in Reason and you'd be controlling it with the EZ guitar.

Doing that you'll run into the problems I explained in the post above. These problems are why we use the script programs, programs with an hta extension. In the script, you have to select the midi input, which is the ux16, then have it set to a midi output, which is midiyoke. Then in Reason, you select midiyoke and that's what we around here call an ideal setup for the ez guitars.

Go back a page for the guy with tencrazy in his signature for one of the scripts. Not sure where the other script is.

As mentioned, each string from the EZ will show up as a different channel, so in Reason 3 you will also have to select "Edit|Preferences...|Advanced MIDI" and assign the UX16 to a MIDI Bus, then specify the channel destinations.

Otherwise, my script is at the site below. If you want to use it, then you will have to get MIDIYoke configured.

Thanks, that makes perfect sense. So I should be able to just plug this guitar in with the midi-usb U16 device and select it in reason. I installed the driver that came on the CD, the properties say the device "Yamaha USB midi driver" is working properly. yet reason does not recognize the device anywhere and it tells me there is no device attached. I also went to advanced midi and i have no selection for each port, the pull down menu just says "no midi input" any ideas?

Post

I would ask at the registered Reason users forum.

Agreed: perhaps the Propellerhead Software forum could be of help. You might have to do a 'scan' for recently added ports? Not sure.

Also, if the port shows up in other applications, then that would be a good sign, at least.

thanks guys, I got my guitar working great with reason, now the only problem I am having is latency. I am running the guitar enviroment script, and midi yoke, and it still has alot of latency. I was wondering if it is the yamaha ux16 interface, it seems cheap or is there anything else I can do?

Post

The Yamaha UX16 isn't cheap, it's just a midi driver and not an audio driver. Audio cards that come with any standard computer will have high latency.

I mentioned before, you could use asio4all http://www.asio4all.com

Asio4all will eliminiate latency a lot but it's nowhere near as stable as a real audiocard meant for more involved stuff, like M-Audio.

I just bought an EZ-EG and I was wondering if anyone has used it successfully with a mac? Since the UX16 doesn't have a driver for OSX, I assume that I will need another midi interface. Any suggestions? I'm also trying to use Reason 3.0 so any ideas there?

Post

I would ask in the getting started forum here about midi interfaces for a mac. You'd be wise to get one with an audio driver too, or else you're stuck with the free asio4all driver.

Running the midi from an ez-eg directly into a synth sucks. All the strings transmit on different channels and fretting a note produces a low velocity note, which makes it hard to play. That's why we use the scripts built to enhance these guitars. I don't know if the scripts will work on a mac.

Also Reason doesn't allow vst plugs in it, otherwise you could us ndcmidi and filter out the low velocity notes, or a similar plug that works on mac. You could always run a plugin like this in a different host, and send the midi out from midiyoke.

I've never used a mac, but on windows i could load a plug in savihost and send the midi out to midiyoke1, then configure reason to accept midiyoke1 and you'd be set for a normal playing guitar.

Not that I've heard of, but there are no limitations to that.

If you have a MIDI-In port on another USB MIDI keyboard, that would work.

Likely hook it up via ReWire in another sequencer, and have that sequencer combine the incoming channels into one.

Like you said the problem is the note off situation and you can't solve it, or i should say I didn't find a solution.

Is there a solution ?

Note off solution? You must be referring to when I found there's no note off if you press 2 buttons at once to turn the speaker off. Right after that post I replied that it has regular note offs if you just turn the volume all the way down instead.
