Deadmau5 - WTF?

I lost respect for Deadmau5 when he wrote a song for his girlfriend Sydney Blu, and tried to act like it was her creative efforts.

Not to mention. I've been in the game for over 10 years. Not too long ago you were judged on how well you beatmatched two records together.

What kind of a "DJ" doesn't know how to beatmatch anyway?

Sounds to me like he is afraid of being outshined.

If this is true, I've lost total respect. What a shame.

BTW, Deadmau5 is not House Music royalty. He's only been around for a few years. I would save the term royalty for somebody like Frankie Knuckles, or DJ Dan, or Digweed, or Marshall Jefferson. It's comments like that that inflate his ego. He will fade like they all do. Four years ago Ty Tek was on everyone's DJ set. Eight years ago Hippe and Halo were on top of the Dj charts. House Music trends change quickly.

Here is the irony. Deadmau5 is not a DJ and acknowledges this. The reason he has risen to fame is because of Ableton live. He has been using it to produce great tracks and it allows him to act like a DJ without actually having to beatmatch. Yet he is preventing people from using the very program that helped him get where he is now. Ironic.

Who knows if this is really true, but it's not the first time I've heard something like this.

well i wouldn't believe everything... perhaps it's just a misunderstanding? i would ask joel myself and see if it's really his own opinion. i think some others are behind this.. joel seems very friendly when he posts in public forums and discloses a lot of "tricks" behind his tracks.

He's always been this way, even a while back when he was still uploading stuff on SectionZ.

I dunno, I guess you just have to wait for him to die out and the next "best thing" to make room for new artists.

Kicklicker, I did actually say 'house music royalty right now'. Everything he touches turns to gold. He has awards being thrown at him. I wouldn't try to compare him to the 'legends'.

From what I can gather, he did used to DJ on CDJs as he used the sampling/loop and pitch control quite a lot in his sets. Personally, I have Traktor which I play about with at home but when I'm playing out I use CDJs. DJs should beat match IMO but then maybe I'm an old school stick in the mud.

Fair enough.

I'm old, old school though. I have to admit that I do like some of his tracks. However, I've got enough Vinyl to fill a wall.

What makes me sore is that I spent many years learning how to blow up a dance floor with wax. I'm talking about the old days when DJ's, like myself, would let a mix ride for like three minutes. I'm talkin about having those beats locked so tight, that you only had to itch the pitch control ever so slightly.

This is something that DJ's today do not value. To the best of my knowledge, Deadmau5 only started to Dj because his tracks were sellin like hotcakes. He has only been seen using an Allen and Heath mixer with Live built in. I mean come on. That mixer could knock out an hour set by itself. Yes, that funny head costume is a bonus. But let's at least call it what it is.

What I mean to say is that back in the day you did not have to sabotage other Dj's to make yourself look good. You just had to get up on those Technics and ROCK THE F*CKING HOUSE!

This whole "nobody can use Live and nobody can play tracks faster 126bpm" is just plain Dickish! If it's true!

I'm with you there KL, 20 years spinning and promoting for me. I no longer use vinyl but I can't break away from the CDJs and actual beat mixing. My DJ heroes are the guys who can mix seamlessly for minutes on end, Sasha (although he has gone to the dark side), Digweed, Louie Vega (by far THE most accomplished DJ 've ever had the pleasure to see, mixed 4 1210 for 2 hours often 3 track running while cueing the next. I was stood 6 foot away with my chin on the floor).

I like a few of his tracks and will play them depending on my gig. He only plays his tracks, why not write them all at the same speed so no mixing is required (that would work with clapped out 1210 that are out of sync though)?

he's always been touchy and cocky. So him pulling a stunt like this doesn't surprise me in the least

I was actually thinking about buying some deadmau5 tunes but not anymore. Last thing music needs is more prima donnas.
