Greetz,

I finally got around to remastering this beast and up-sampling it to the minimally decent 192Kbps, and would like your opinions on it.

Here is the remastered version: Grab A Cab Remastered 192Kbps

If you do decide to lend an ear, along with any opinions, could you indicate what you used to listen to it with (i.e., Cans, earbuds, PC Speakers, home stereo, MP3 player, studio-class monitor speakers, all-of-the-above, etc.)?

It's a mere two minutes in length.

For reference, if you feel the need, here's the original mix: Grab A Cab Original - 128Kbps

Much Appreciated! :)

Wow ... what a nice surprise. Not at all the usual KVR fare. Sounds great to me listening on Genelec studio monitors. Really good mix :)

Oh man -- on the Genelecs! :hail: I really wanted to hear that :)

Thanks mate! :hyper:

Frankly, I sweated and worried with the remastering because for the last month my ears are burnt from standing in front of a stack of amps

Cheers & Thanks,

Ahh! Another good set of monitors! :) I think my main worry is always mixing bass and low end properly (I just don't trust my ears as much these days), so it's good to know I got the lower registers happening!

Cheers & Thanks mate :)

One of the best track, i've heard on kaviar yet (i knew it already ... anyway)!

The mix is quite transparent, everything's on the right place ... the bass is outstanding, indeed.

Excellent!

The synth part starting at 00:20 maybe should be a little less brittle and more muffled like a sax and maybe try the vocal 1-track, stark and plain against the backing.. maybe a touch of 1 repeat longish delay. I'd like it to be more Rod Sterling if you know what I mean? Or not.. It's fine as is.. :D

Thanks Chris old mate! :D

Really great to hear that about the bass -- my major worry in remastering was getting that upright to be in-yer-face tonally but not overwhelm the general ambiance.

Cheers & Thanks for listening (again)

Hey Tom -- glad you dig it mate :)

I didn't use any synths in this particular song -- just percs, brass, upright bass, and piano -- but there's a flugelhorn duet that starts up at :18, with a b flat bass trombone following. When you say it should be a bit less brittle and more muffled, do you mean less harsh-sounding? It's possibly too harsh at that spot. In my monitors, it is sounding relatively OK (but yes my ears are burnt as I said :hihi: ) I gotta listen again -- maybe tweak it down a wee smidge and see how it sounds. Not sure what you mean by "vocal 1-track". Do you mean mono or center-extracted perhaps?

What did you listen through mate? :hyper:

Rod Sterling? Not really sure who that is -- sorry.

REALLY appreciate the feedback! :tu:

Listening on phones (AKGs).

Very clean production. Everything crystal clear.

Interesting piece of work. Can't categorise it at all, but it has a curious attraction.
It wasn't me! (well, actually, it probably was) - apparently no longer an 'elderly', now a 'senior'! Is that promotion?

Them is nice cans -- I have the 240DF (Diffuse Field) Studio Monitors -- wouldn't do a song up without 'em!

Thanks Posh! :D

Just checked it out on some ADAM S3A's.
Overall great track. The only thing that bugged me is the verb. A little to much for my liking. Mostly the kick verb is what got to me. But as i said cool track, me just nit picking.

Could be worse I suppose. When I was at college I used to wear square black rimmed glasses and got the nickname 'Joe 90'

Yeah I can hear what you mean. There's no verb on the kick specifically, but maybe the room IR isn't as tight as it could/should be. Trouble is, that entire kit is on one IR and the perc are all on several different other room IRs -- all mixed to that track (which, I reckon when added up together in the mix makes a bit too much verb in total on the ears). However, I'd have to do the drums/perc track over again and remix (too much trouble for this song) to make any changes (well -- maybe one day  ). Other than that, having that particular spatial feel is intentional and more or less what I was after. Mainly though, I wanted the piano to really be hollow-spooky and to kinda float above the club IR used on the brass. Sometimes I think I went a little overboard on it and maybe it's too weird -- perhaps even too unnatural sounding, then other times I tend to like it. Anyway, it's taken me over three years to get off me arse to remaster it -- around here that's progress... :hihi:

Cheers for the listen with the ADAMs and constructive comments mate! :tu:
