I don't know about the lack of 'knowledge', to have wisdom requires knowledge. But, the lack of certainty in every case.
a mother, is good. nurturing but strict.
a good teacher has to inspire, and preserve.
The teacher has to be able to demonstrate the lesson. A good teacher can get away with a certain amt. of relying on the talk, but a great one inspires by walking the walk.

Sex appeal.
Don't believe me? When I was a wee little kid, I was convinced to start playing seriously because the head dude at the music school WAS the Fonz and I was convinced my teacher was Alison Moyet.

I believe that one is more powerful when in possession of knowledge of the rules they break. Breaking them knowingly instead of happy accidents would probably make a better teacher IMO (not necessarily a better musician, not saying that at all). I don't want to be taught bad habits unless there's some foundation and comparison that shows they are not bad habits at all.mellotronaut wrote:the lack of 'knowledge'

that's a good point. I had a good teacher on an instrument, and a great one.
the good one was really a rule follower. a good critic, which was invaluable at that point for me.
the great one was a kind of nut. he didn't give a shit what was right, but what worked.
he knew the rules, but he said, how do YOU proceed?
in terms of theory, he said, 'here's the conventions. lot of people have it down to a science. boring.'
but the main thing was he said, there's no reason you can't get good real quick, people will tell you things have to go a certain way according to a plan they've seen, but that's bullshit. you have the potential to be great right now, so get busy on that, time's a' wastin'.
pretty crazy. I got into conservatory after about two years with him, starting from nothing.
